SmugMug Corner #37: Lynne Hulbert It's Friday, so that means it's time for another SmugMug Corner interview! This week we meet Lynne Hulbert, a wedding/portrait photographer from Indiana.

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Lynne Hulbert, I am 30 years old, and live in Indianapolis, Indiana. I’m a healthcare marketing professional and a wedding / portrait photographer.

What is your background/training in photography?

I took a darkroom class in college and spent a few years as a graphic designer which introduced me to visual communication theory and Photoshop. Other than that, I’m self taught.

How long has photography been a passion for you? When, where and how did it start?

When I was 16, my neighbor owned a tiny newspaper. One day he handed me an old Pentax and press credentials to shoot local high school sports for him. He offered me $5 for every shot that was good enough to print. It took me a few games, but it was a great crash course in anticipating and stopping action. I dabbled in photography from then on, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that it became a true passion. After a few life-changing events (including the birth of my son, Harrison) I dove into the digital SLR world as a creative outlet. Once I shot my first wedding I was immediately hooked. I haven’t set the camera down since!

What equipment is in your camera bag? What piece of equipment will be added to the collection next?

I shoot with Canon 20Ds; the 17-55 2.8 IS, the 70-200 2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8. I am a big believer in Canon EX flashes whenever and wherever I can. Off-camera ETTL-II is a beautiful thing when going into stealth mode in low light. I am still debating the 40D (for response time and EFS lenses) vs. the 5D (beautiful ISO performance) as my next body. After-shoot, I can’t live without Adobe Lightroom, which has improved the way I work and shoot immensely.

What are your favorite places/subjects to photograph? Why?

I say all the time that I can’t take a non-people photograph to save my life. I wish I had the eye for landscape and stills. I tend to be inspired by people and the environments they interact with, especially architecture. I love photographing children because they are such open books – they haven’t discovered self-consciousness. Weddings are a welcome challenge and a wealth of opportunity -- such a high pitch of emotion and action to capitalize upon.

Who are your biggest photographic influences? Why? What about their work influences your work?

Historically, Helmut Newton pushing the limits with his brand of sensuality, urban grittiness and vulnerability. In the wedding photography world, I’m a huge fan of Ben Chrisman. I am in awe of his ability to produce not just great wedding photographs, but producing in each frame a breathtaking, layered story.

How long have you been Smug with your photographs? What features do you most enjoy with your SmugMug account?

About two years. The display quality is second to none. I appreciate the progressive, user-centric business model. I love the CSS and Java customizability, which enables me to have one site for promotion and fulfillment. So many amazing features have been added in the past 6 months, I haven’t had time to test drive them all! The pro features for sales and image protection are indispensible.

If you had do sum up in 50 words or less the impact SmugMug has made on your photography/photography business, those 50 words would be...

It provided a flexible marketing tool and sales platform for this non-techie to develop a beautiful, affordable site that is easily maintained and updated. It also connected me to other great photographers, who have taught me so much.

If you had to give one piece of advice to those wanting to pursue photography, what would you tell them?

The most enjoyable and beneficial relationships to cultivate are those with other photographers. Photography – whether professional or hobby – is infinitely more fun when you can share and learn with like-minded folks.
