SmugMug Corner #40: Pete Springer

SmugMug Corner Questions SmugMug Corner #40: Pete Springer It's Friday, and that means it's time for another SmugMug Corner interview. This week we meet fashion photographer extraordinaire Pete Springer from Portland, Oregon.

Name: Pete Springer

Tell us a little about yourself.

Pete Springer, Portland, Oregon photographer.

I’m still working a day job (as a radio reporter) – though fortunately it involves some photography. Recently covered the presidential campaign visits and got to photograph Obama, Clinton, and McCain events.

What is your background/training in photography?

Photography classes and classes and classes since junior high. Then, several years ago, I completed the New York Institute of Photography professional photographer course.

I still read photography books and magazines all the time, and use forums on the web for critiques, tips, and just showing off my work.

How long has photography been a passion for you? When, where and how did it start?

Like many others, I took a photography class as a teenager. When I saw photos “appearing” on prints in the darkroom, I was hooked. I shot film for years but when digital came around, I knew instantly that was where it was at and quickly bought the best digital camera I could afford (a coolpix).

Then my day job sent me to Egypt (!) to photograph local soldiers stationed there, and I was really, really, really hooked! I still do some photojournalism, but my focus is more on commercial photography these days.

What equipment is in your camera bag? What piece of equipment will be added to the collection next?

I have a Canon 5D that is my main studio/portrait camera. I also have a Canon Mark IIN that is a wonderful photojournalism and action camera. I use the MK II N for web catalog work too. And I shoot with the Canon G9 a fair amount too when just shooting snaps. Next up? Hopefully the new 5D released this summer!

What are your favorite places/subjects to photograph? Why?

Fashion. Hands down, fashion photography and models are my favorite subjects. I love the lighting and posing challenges and enjoy working with a team (hair, makeup, etc) on shoots.

Who are your biggest photographic influences? Why? What about their work influences your work?

Anything in British Vogue or iD magazine! I worship Steven Meisel, of course, though Matt Jones, Nick Knight, and Corrine Day are inspirations too.

How long have you been Smug with your photographs? What features do you most enjoy with your SmugMug account?

I think I’ve been a SmugMugger for three years… I like the ability to sell event photos and use private proof galleries for clients. I also deliver all my files to clients via SmugMug.

If you had do sum up in 50 words or less the impact SmugMug has made on your photography/photography business, those 50 words would be...

It’s really helped me establish a strong web presence and sell images and services that otherwise would not have been possible.

If you had to give one piece of advice to those wanting to pursue photography, what would you tell them?

Be ready to eat, sleep, and shit photography. Seriously—you absolutely have to have the drive for this business. Everyone is a photographer these days and you’ll need incredible amounts of photography passion to keep going day after day. You REALLY need to want this or it won’t happen.
