Articles By Amy: What Lenses to Use for Landscape PhotographyThere a tremendous number of lenses available for digital photographers today, and for those who specialize in landscape imagery there are nice range of lenses at a good array of prices. A search can yield telephoto zoom lenses, super wide angle lenses and traditional or normal to moderate wide angles.

For most photographers, however, investing in numerous and somewhat expensive lenses may be out of the question. If that is the case then an investment in a wide angle 70mm lens is the best choice for great photographs and results. This is because the lens will allow for tight compositions and easy filter use, which, in the end, can provide a tremendous number of options and flexibility within imagery.

A 70mm wide angle lens will have numerous settings up to the 70mm setting, and an excellent educational and experimental project for a photographer looking to learn how to capture a landscape images in the manner they desire is to use the different focal lengths of the lens at the same distance. For example, take images at 24mm, 35mm, and 70mm at distances of 5, 10 and 25 feet from the subject’s foreground location. Review the results to see just how dramatically different the results can be with such simple alterations.

Most landscape photographers rely upon a tripod for minimal shake and blur, and when investing in a good lens it is also a great idea to purchase the tripod simultaneously.

Price ranges for these lenses can vary tremendously and generally range from three to five hundred dollars (and up to thousands of dollars) depending upon the model of digital camera and the full range of options required. Because this is the most common lens used for numerous types of photography there will be literally hundreds of dealers and prices to choose from, but it is wise to work with a dealer who specializes in the brand or manufacturer of other equipment owned by the photographer.

Many photographers who specialize in landscape photography will rely solely upon their telephoto lenses instead of a wide angle, but these tend to be for wildlife or outdoor sports photographs rather than a traditional wide angle full scene image. These too are available in a wide range of prices and options, and a photographer should purchase from a retailer who specializes in digital photography equipment, and is able to handle the brand and manufacturer of their existing equipment.
