Video Corner #41: Photographing Butterflies

Today’s Video Corner, a ‘Photography Thursday’ edition, looks specifically at photographing butterflies. First we’ll look some tips on how to best photograph butterflies, then we’ll analize several shots taken during the shoot.





Butterfly Technique Summary

  • Use a macro lens 50mm - 200mm or a telephoto lens with extension tubes added
  • Aperture around f/8
  • Stalk in slowly and allow the butterfly to settle
  • Be careful not to cast your shadow on the butterfly
  • Get wings in same plane of focus as the body
  • Consider using manual focus
  • Shutter speed 1/250s or higher
  • Uprate ISO if necessary
