SmugMug Corner #62: Ken Derry

Normally, every other Friday, we have the chance to read an interview with, and check out some photographs taken by some fantastic photographers in a series we call SmugMug Corner. Of course, by the time this goes live, it's Saturday (I have to admit, I got caught up in the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games). I grew up in Vancouver, and just couldn't pull myself away from the TV. So, without further adieu, let's meet architectural photographer Ken Derry from Chicago, Illinois.

Name: Ken Derry

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Ken Derry, age 53. I live in the south suburbs of Chicago. I have been a Heavy Equipment Operator for 30 years.

What is your background/training in photography?

I have always been interested in photography. When I was younger I took a couple of photography classes. Most of my knowledge has been through years of experience and learning from other photographers and friends. Lots of trial and errors.

How long has photography been a passion for you? When, where and how did it start?

I have always had an interest in photography but really started shooting about 30 years ago. That is when I got my first nice camera, a Nikon FE with all the extras.

What equipment is in your camera bag? What piece of equipment will be added to the collection next?

I am currently shooting with a Kodak Easyshare DX7590. This was my first digital camera. I am planning on getting a new camera very soon. I miss shooting with all the different kinds of lenses like what I have with my Nikon 35mm camera.

What are your favorite places/subjects to photograph? Why?

I really like shooting just about anything. But since I have had so many opportunities of taking great photo's in my line of work I tend to take mostly architecture photos. But that doesn't mean you won't catch me out on the weekends taking plenty of shots of nature, people, places and things.

Who are your biggest photographic influences? Why? What about their work influences your work?

I can't say that I have one favorite photographer. I do enjoy watching Art Wolfe on his show about photography. He is an amazing photographer.

My view out my windshield first thing in the morning... beautiful

How long have you been Smug with your photographs? What features do you most enjoy with your SmugMug account?

I have been with SmugMug for about a year but have enjoyed photo's on SmugMug for much longer. I have really enjoyed being able to post pictures there. It is easy to use and the tech support is great!!!

If you had do sum up in 50 words or less the impact SmugMug has made on your photography/photography business, those 50 words would be...

Because of the amazing worldwide response from posting my pictures on SmugMug, I felt confident enough to publish a coffee table book. "Chicago A View From The Top", is now available online at www.KenDerry.com.

If you had to give one piece of advice to those wanting to pursue photography, what would you tell them?

Go For It!!!! Photography can be a very fulfilling hobby or career. Life is to short to not enjoy what you do. Aim high. Keep your focus. Capture your dreams.
