SmugMug Corner #83: Jerry Snelling

Every other Friday, we get to meet some of the best photographers that use to share and sell their photographs in a series we call SmugMug Corner. This week we meet retired Alaskan gardener turned hobbiest photographer Jerry Snelling.

Name: Jerry Snelling

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Jerry Snelling and I'm 59 years old. I retired when I was 51 after 30 years with the State of Alaska as Head Gardener at the Sitka Pioneer's Home.

What is your background/training in photography?

I've had no training in photography except trial and error... lots of errors.

How long has photography been a passion for you? When, where and how did it start?

I've always had an interest in photography but after I retired I was able to switch to digital photography which tied in nicely with my other hobby... computers.

What equipment is in your camera bag? What piece of equipment will be added to the collection next?

I shoot now with a Canon 7D and use a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. When I feel like carrying the extra weight I use a Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM.

I also use a TrekPod XL which is a wonderful combination hiking staff, monopod, and tripod.

I use PhotoShop CS5.

What are your favorite places/subjects to photograph? Why?

I take pictures of nature mostly while walking my dog in the Sitka National Historical Park. I'm a lazy photographer and may go a month without taking a picture. I carry my camera every day though, waiting until a unique shot comes along. I look for the sun shining through the trees and for trails winding through the woods. I love to see sunrays through clouds or fog.

How long have you been Smug with your photographs? What features do you most enjoy with your SmugMug account?

I found SmugMug shortly after I retired in 2002 while looking for an online home where people could view my photos. When I got a few requests for prints I upgraded to SmugMugPro.

Foggy Trees

If you had do sum up in 50 words or less the impact SmugMug has made on your photography/photography business, those 50 words would be...

My business is quite small and I really just consider it a hobby... if it was like work I wouldn't do it. I love SmugMug because they took all the work out of dealing with customers. I can maintain a great looking site where I can steer people to see my photos and if I can sell a few it's even better. It's all about getting people to look at my photos... I don't make nearly as much as I spend on equipment and software. SmugMug allows me to have more fun with my hobby.

If you had to give one piece of advice to those wanting to pursue photography, what would you tell them?

Take the pictures that you enjoy taking and splurge for the full version of PhotoShop.
