Contest Corner Challenges Canceled

Not permanently… but at least for a couple of weeks; probably until the 2008 Photograph of the Year is complete. There are a couple of surprises coming, and we want to make sure they’re all in place before we get the Contest Corner Challenges rolling again. CCC#60: That Bites - Winner Revealed

Well, the voting is complete. Once the dust settled, it was greydog who was declared the winner of Contest Corner Challenge #60: That Bites with her photograph titled ‘Mmmmm… Whip Cream!’ The contest was sponsored by our good friends at SmugMug.com. Our 60th Contest Corner Challenge marks the last time we’ll vote on a Contest Corner Challenge in 2008. CCC#61 will be announced on December 23rd, and runs into the new year. Before we get ahead of ourselves, though, we do have to vote for the winning photograph in CCC#60: That Bites.

Malaria Bites Fund Raiser Update

A couple of weeks ago, along with the announcement of Contest Corner Challenge #60: That Bites, we started a site-wide fund raiser called “Malaria Bites.” Our goal? To raise money to purchase mosquito nets for children in Liberia to help prevent the spread of malaria by partnering with the Canadian Red Cross. Contest Corner Challenge #60 Bites

As I’m sure you well know, every three weeks a new Contest Corner Challenge is announced. CCC#60 was announced yesterday, but this one is a little more special than most. Not only is it a photography contest, but it’s also a fundraiser. In addition to having an excuse to go out and practice photography, submit a photograph, and maybe even win a prize; but you also have the opportunity to save a life.

CCC#59: Digital Darkroom #3 Winner Announced

It’s not very often that the winner announcements of the Photograph of the Month contest and a Contest Corner Challenge happen on the same day (ok, they were both supposed to be announced yesterday, but I spread it out a bit - it’s a lot of work!), but it’s even less common to have the same person win two Contest Corner Challenge contests in a row. In fact, the last time it happened was when Karen won both CCC#43 and CCC#44 about a year ago. This time, it’s tamara who won CCC#58, and has now won CCC#59.

If you’re active in the forums, you’ve probably already found the voting thread and cast your vote. If not, you have until 3pm EST (that’s 8pm GMT) to check out the entries and make your vote count.

Contest Corner Challenge #58: My Home Town challenged photographers to get out into the place that they live and photograph something that captures the essence of their home town. Twenty-four photographers from eight different countries (and believe it or not, 24 unique cities) trekked out into their hometown and their photos are now available to view and vote on.

You’ve got no excuse this time. I try to make most of the Contest Corner Challenges accessible to as many people as possible, but obviously, certain geographical limitations do come into play once and a while. This time, though, you’ve got no excuse. We all live somewhere. Even better, I know you all have access to the internet, so I’m guessing not one of you lives in some remote tree fort or anything. I lived in the middle of no where for a year, and even then, I wouldn’t be able to wiggle out of this one. Your task? Take a photograph of your home town. It doesn’t matter if you live in a huge metropolis like New York or Singapore, or you live in a small town or in the middle of no where (like Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories of Canada), you can do this one.

Scorched Earth by Brad V Wins CCC#57

After 5 days of voting, Brad V emerged victorious as the winner of Contest Corner Challenge #57: Pollution. The fifty-seventh Contest Corner Challenge asked photographers to photograph some form of pollution, or the negative effects of pollution on an environment. There were a lot of great (if not depressing) photographs of pollution all over the planet, but Brad’s photograph of an orange, smog-filled, night sky behind numerous smoke-stacks spitting pollution into the air easily won the contest with over 25% of the votes from a total of nineteen entries.

Every third Monday, the entry period for a Contest Corner Challenge comes to a close. The next day (which, on most calendars, is a Tuesday), we begin the voting process, checking out the entries and casting our votes. Five days later, voting ends, and the next Monday, the winner is announced. If it sounds complicated, it’s only because I didn’t explain it well. Honestly, it’s pretty straight forward. Regardless of if you understand the entire process or not, all that you really need to know is that it’s time to vote on the entries for Contest Corner Challenge #57: Pollution.

According to Wikipedia, “pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the physical systems or living organisms they are in. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances, or energy, such as noise, heat, or light energy.” Most photographs we take are of “beautiful” or “pretty” things - generally speaking, we don’t enjoy photographing “ugly” things - however, it is sometimes the most disturbing of subjects that make for the most powerful photographs. Your challenge for Contest Corner Challenge #57: Pollution is to photograph some form of pollution, or the negative effects of pollution on an environment.
