August 11th Chat Recap - What Would YOU Like to See Around the Corner

Earlier in the week, we held a “featured chat” (side note: we gotta come up with a better name for our “official chats” than that) where we discussed what YOU would like to see around the Corner. I announced it last minute (though our amazing mods had planned it well in advance), but it was great to see 20-25 of you show up. This post (while long) will serve as a recap of what we discussed in the chat, in addition to discussing some of the potential changes we may implement based on your ideas. Also, be sure to leave your feedback in the comments! We would love to hear as many opinions as possible, even if you are unable to make it to the chats.

August 2008 Bling

A day or two before the Corner Newsletter goes out, we take a couple of minutes to see who’s reached posting milestones here around the Corner. This month, however, we’ve only got 1 person who’s receiving a Commitment Award - newlove. It is very fitting that Lise is receiving an award this month, as she has been putting a LOT of effort into the Corner Chats, as well as organizing some of the site improvements (more to come on that later today) and suggestions for making the Corner a better place. Thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to the Corner, and congratulations to newlove who is receiving the award below!

Jim Harris Wins August 2008 Photograph of the Month Contest

Despite the fact that the voting and the winner announcement was a couple of days later than normal, that, by no means, makes the winning photograph any less than fantastic. Jim Harris (aka jaharris1001) of Deltona, Florida won the August 2008 Photograph of the Month contest with his photo titled “Pilons and Morning Colors.”

August Corner Catch-Up

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’ve been out of town for the past couple of weeks. Of course, the Corner doesn’t stop ticking when I’m away, and there’s lots to catch up on now that I’m back. To make matters worse, it’s actually a holiday today up here in Canada, and I’ll be out for most of the evening (taking some engagement photos for a couple of friends). That being said, over the next couple of days, there will be a lot of catching up going on around the Corner.

A couple of days ago, while still on vacation, we began the voting process, albeit a couple of days late, for the August 2008 Photograph of the Month contest. We have 12 photographs to choose from, including two by Abdulmajeed and jaharris1001.

July 2008 Bling

While I’m still technically on vacation, I’m now back from my week of internet exhile (I was on Mayne Island off the coast of British Columbia, Canada - no internet access). I promised my wife (and myself) that I wouldn’t work too much while on vacation, so I’m trying to get the essentials done, and I’ll start on the catch-up process when I get back to the office at the beginning of August. This, however, couldn’t wait. I always hand out the bling in the middle of the month before the Corner Newsletter goes out. This month, the newsletter will be late going out (in case you hadn’t noticed), so the bling is late too. There’s only 1 person receiving bling this month, and it’s none other than our Contest Corner Challenge machine: Spicoli, reaching the 5,000 post milestone with a grand total of NINE Contest Corner Challenge wins… Wow. Thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to the Corner, and congratulations to Carl who is receiving the award below.

I realize the June 2008 Corner Newsletter is later than normal this month, but it’s always worth waiting for, right? The server finished sending out the newsletters about an hour ago, so if you haven’t received it yet, you’re not going to. June 2008 Bling

It’s the middle of the month, and I’m preparing to send out the Corner Newsletter which means it’s time to hand out awards around the Corner. We have 5 awards to had out this month, including a Platinum Commitment Award to ohenry (only the fifth Platinum Award handed out to date). Now, these commitment awards are awarded to those who reach certain post milestones (10,000 posts for a platinum award, 5,000 posts for a gold award, 2,000 posts for a silver award, and 1,000 posts for a bronze award), but this one for Carl (aka ohenry) is much more than the 10,000+ posts he’s added to the Corner over the past 4+ years (yes, Carl has been around the Corner for over 4 years), but it’s a HUGE thank-you on my part for all the stuff Carl does around the Corner. Not only are all of his posts valuable to anyone that reads them (in fact, he wrote the article on how to critique a photograph), but Carl also pretty much runs the Premiere Corner and the Premiere Projects (and all he gets is, well, nothing). While I run and manage the Corner more or less by myself, without the help of a select few people like Carl, PhotographyCorner would not be the site that it is. Thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to the Corner, and congratulations to those who are receiving the awards below.
