August 2011 Bling

PhotographyCorner 1K Commitment AwardThe August 2011 Corner Newsletter should be “hitting the shelves,” within the next hour or so, and before we send out each newsletter we always make sure to hand out Commitment Awards to those that have reached milestones with regards to their post-count in the past month. Commitment Awards are handed out to those who have shown great community dedication & commitment, and have reached a specific post-count milestone (1k, 2k, 5k and 10k). This month we have 2 folks that really haven’t been around the Corner all that long receiving a Bronze Commitment Award: Sharna and Russ. At the rate these 2 are going, they’ll be getting the Silver Commitment Award for hitting 2k posts in no time!

Jim Harris Wins His Third PotM

August 2011 Photograph of the MonthThe competition was tight, and the votes were quite spread out, but after they were tallied up, jaharris1001’s photo “Old Citrus Wagon on a HOT Summer Night” took almost 1/5th of the ballots cast (you can see the final voting results here). To see the other photos up for the title of August 2011 Photograph of the Month, drop by the August 2011 PotM Photo Gallery.

The contest was sponsored by our friends at DayMen Photo Marketing (an innovative manufacturer and distributor of high quality imaging products and accessories) and Lowepro (inventors and designers of popular camera bags, photographers and lovers of the natural world who take our reputation as The Trusted Original™ to heart). Since Jim is, of course, a Premiere Member, he will receive a Lowepro Terraclime 100 camera bag.

Make sure to drop by the award thread in the forums to check out a full version of the winning photo, and to congratulate Jim on his third Photograph of the Month.

Vote for the August 2011 Photograph of the Month

I can’t believe it’s already time to be voting for the August 2011 Photograph of the Month - summer (for those of us in the northern hemisphere, at least) is flying by. The photographs for every Photograph of the Month contest (PotM for short) are nominated throughout the month by the Premiere Members of the site. With a week to go in the month, I wade through all the nominations (special shout-out to chellezfotoz for a bunch of the nominations each month!), and then post up 10-15 of the best ones in a photo gallery. The community has the opportunity to browse through the photos, then cast their vote in the voting thread in the forum. After a week of voting, we tally all the votes and declare a winner!

The contest is being sponsored by our friends at DayMen Photo Marketing (an innovative manufacturer and distributor of high quality imaging products and accessories) and Lowepro (inventors and designers of popular camera bags, photographers and lovers of the natural world who take our reputation as The Trusted Original™ to heart). If the winner is a Premiere Member, they will receive a Lowepro Terraclime 100 camera bag. If the winner is not a Premiere Member, they will receive a Lifetime, Level I Premiere Membership.

So you’ve got a couple of things to do.
  1. Head over to the August 2011 Photograph of the Month Photo Gallery and browse through the photographs.
  2. Go to the voting thread to cast your vote.
  3. Continue enjoying the articles, tutorials, product reviews, projects, galleries, forums and contests on PhotographyCorner.

Big Sur, CA is the August 2009 Photograph of the Month

As a popular tourist destination in the summer months, especially for photographers, Big Sur, California is a fitting subject for PhotographyCorner’s August 2009 Photograph of the Month. After dozens of nominations were whittled down to 15 photographs, the community voted. The votes were close, but with almost 16% of the vote, shniks’s photograph taken at sunset in Big Sur, California was declared the victor. You can check out the nominated photographs in the August 2009 Photograph of the Month Gallery, and you can see the final voting results in the voting thread in the forum.

The August 2009 Photograph of the Month contest was sponsored by our friends at Lensbaby.com, who are proud to present Nikhil Shahi with a Lensbaby Muse with Double Glass Optic (valued at $150!). Make sure to check out the winning photograph of Big Sur, California, and to congratulate Nikhil on his first PotM win in the award thread!

August 20th Corner Community Chat Recap

I know this post is a little late, considering the chat was over 2 weeks ago, but better late than never, right? For those of you that were in the 2 chats we held a couple of weeks ago, this will be a bit of a review, but for those of you that couldn’t make it (we held one at 2pm and one at 7pm EST), here’s what we talked about:

The August 2008 Corner Newsletter

Just a quick post to let you know that the August 2008 Corner Newsletter is finally complete and has been sent out. If you’ve opted to receive emails from the administrator in your UserCP, you should have it waiting for you in your inbox (make sure to mark admin@photographycorner.com as an allowed email address if you have some sort of spam/email filtering enabled). For those of you that either choose not to receive emails from PhotographyCorner, or those of you that are not members of the PhotographyCorner Forums, you can read the newsletter online here. Oh, and sorry to about 2,000 of you that received it twice - as it was sending out, I noticed a couple of errors in the first copy… oops! Also, in the first couple of paragraphs, I asked for feedback on the newsletters. You can either reply to the newsletter email address and it will get to me, or send me an email at admin@photographycorner.com. It’s a long one (had to make up for missing the newsletter last month), so make sure to grab a coffee or something before you sit down to read it.

August 11th Chat Recap - What Would YOU Like to See Around the Corner

Earlier in the week, we held a “featured chat” (side note: we gotta come up with a better name for our “official chats” than that) where we discussed what YOU would like to see around the Corner. I announced it last minute (though our amazing mods had planned it well in advance), but it was great to see 20-25 of you show up. This post (while long) will serve as a recap of what we discussed in the chat, in addition to discussing some of the potential changes we may implement based on your ideas. Also, be sure to leave your feedback in the comments! We would love to hear as many opinions as possible, even if you are unable to make it to the chats.

PhotographyCorner Commitment AwardA day or two before the Corner Newsletter goes out, we take a couple of minutes to see who’s reached posting milestones here around the Corner. This month, however, we’ve only got 1 person who’s receiving a Commitment Award - newlove. It is very fitting that Lise is receiving an award this month, as she has been putting a LOT of effort into the Corner Chats, as well as organizing some of the site improvements (more to come on that later today) and suggestions for making the Corner a better place. Thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to the Corner, and congratulations to newlove who is receiving the award below!

Jim Harris Wins August 2008 Photograph of the Month Contest

Despite the fact that the voting and the winner announcement was a couple of days later than normal, that, by no means, makes the winning photograph any less than fantastic. Jim Harris (aka jaharris1001) of Deltona, Florida won the August 2008 Photograph of the Month contest with his photo titled “Pilons and Morning Colors.”

August Corner Catch-Up

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’ve been out of town for the past couple of weeks. Of course, the Corner doesn’t stop ticking when I’m away, and there’s lots to catch up on now that I’m back. To make matters worse, it’s actually a holiday today up here in Canada, and I’ll be out for most of the evening (taking some engagement photos for a couple of friends). That being said, over the next couple of days, there will be a lot of catching up going on around the Corner.

CCC#38 Announced - Can You Photograph Your Daily Grind?

With September just around the Corner, we’re getting back into the regular “swing of things.” Why not turn “the daily grind” into a photograph? But what does the daily grind look like? It could be a traffic jam, dishes piled up, stacks of homework - whatever makes up your daily grind, that’s what we want to see in your photograph.
