Carlo Galliani Wins His First Photograph of the Month Contest

Amidst all the commotion of the Photograph of the Year contest, it can be easy to overlook our Photograph of the Month contest. There were some amazing nominations this month (browse through them in the January 2013 PotM Photo Gallery, but after voting was complete, carlogalliani finally won his first Photograph of the Month contest with his refraction shot called “Reflection in Drops.” You can see the final voting results now revealed in the voting thread.

We usually have sponsors for our contests, but unfortunately no one stepped up for the January contest this year (if you’re interested in sponsoring a contest, check out our advertising page for more info). Since Carlo is not a Premiere Member, he unfortunately doesn’t receive a prize. If he had been a Premiere Member, he would have picked himself up a set of super-awesome Silver Brass Camera Cufflinks (oh well - maybe I’ll offer them up again next time we don’t have a contest sponsor!).

Oh, and don’t forget to drop by the award thread to check out a larger version of Carlo’s winning photograph, and to congratulate him on his first Photograph of the Month victory!

January 2012 Bling

PhotographyCorner Commitment AwardUsually the day before each Corner Newsletter goes out (look for the 2011-Photograph-of-the-Year-Edition Newsletter to come out later today), we take a couple of minutes to recognize and award members of the Corner who have hit posting milestones over the past month. Commitment Awards are handed out to those who have shown great community dedication & commitment, and have reached a specific post-count milestone (1k, 2k, 5k and 10k). We have one member receiving an award this month: Sharna! Sharna is one of the most active and helpful members of the site (look for her to be added to the Mod Squad soon!), and is constantly helping the Corner to run smoothly - a well-earn award to be sure!

Vapor Trail Takes First PotM of 2012

January 2012 Photograph of the MonthVoting was a little delayed because of the holidays, but after all the votes were totaled, a Premiere Project winning photograph - Vapor Trail by cup4tml - garnered the most votes by the community to take the first Photograph of the Month contest of 2012. Every Premiere Project winning photograph is automatically in entered into the running for Photograph of the Month (just one of the many perks of Premiere Membership), and sometimes they’re good enough to win the big prize.

Check out the other photographs that were in the running in the January 2012 Photograph of the Month Gallery, and take a look at the final voting results (there were a couple that were pretty close!).

The contest was sponsored by our friends at DayMen Photo Marketing (an innovative manufacturer and distributor of high quality imaging products and accessories) and Acme Made (best known for incorporating innovative textiles and materials with contemporary styling to produce attractive bags, cases and sleeves for laptops, eReaders, smart phones, and digital cameras. Since Doug is (obviously) a Premiere Member, he will receive an Acme Made Laptop Sleeve or an Acme Made Kindle Hardback Folio case.

So there are 2 ways to get your photograph into a Photograph of the Month contest. You can either win a Premiere Project (become a Premiere Member here), or you can have a photograph (that you’ve posted up in the forums or the galleries) nominated by a Premiere Member. Oh, and it helps if you take some decent photographs, too. Think you have what it takes to win a Photograph of the Month contest?

Make sure to drop by the award thread in the forums to congratulate Doug on his third Photograph of the Month victory!

Check out the Nominations for the January 2012 PotM

It’s running a little late this month due to the holidays, but once you check out the photographs that have been nominated for the January 2012 Photograph of the Month, I’m sure you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

Every month (usually during the last week of the month), once the community has had a change to browse through the best photographs that have been posted up to the forums and galleries, the Premiere Members nominate their favourites, and I whittle them down to 10-15. Then the community votes and decides which is the best one, and which is to be crowned the “Photograph of the Month” for the next month. The winner has his/her winning photograph displayed on the PhotographyCorner.com homepage, along with other prizes donated by a variety of sponsors.

The January 2012 Photograph of the Month (PotM) is being sponsored by our friends at DayMen Photo Marketing (an innovative manufacturer and distributor of high quality imaging products and accessories) and Acme Made (best known for incorporating innovative textiles and materials with contemporary styling to produce attractive bags, cases and sleeves for laptops, eReaders, smart phones, and digital cameras. If the winner is a Premiere Member, they will receive an Acme Made Laptop Sleeve or an Acme Made Kindle Hardback Folio case. If the winner is not a Premiere Member, they will receive a Lifetime, Level I Premiere Membership.

So here’s what you have to do: First, head on over to the January 2012 Photograph of the Month Photo Gallery and check out the nominated photographs. Then go to the voting thread to cast your vote. In a week (at approximately 9:30pm EST on Thursday, January 5th, 2012), voting will be complete, and the winner will be announced. It’s as simple as that.

The January 2011 Corner Newsletter is Coming at You

As has become the trend in recent months, the Corner Newsletter (now in it’s EIGHTH year: 2004-2011) barely makes it out the door before the end of the month. The January 2011 edition is packed full of goodness, though. Photograph of the Year stuff, a bunch of product reviews and great blog posts. If you haven’t been keeping up with the Corner lately, this newsletter will get you caught up in a hurry. If you’re a member of the Corner, it should be waiting for you in your inbox. If you’re not a member (what’s up with that??! - register for FREE here), you can read it online here in the Corner Newsletter Archive.

This newsletter was sponsored by PrintedArt, who is not only the lead sponsor of the 2010 Photograph of the Year contest, but they’ve also sponsored several of our Photograph of the Month contests (providing several members with FANTASTIC LOOKING prints). In addition, they’ve continued to support and invest in the growth of the PhotographyCorner community by advertising in the newsletter and on the site as well (I’m sure you’ve seen their banners around!). The best part about working with PrintedArt, however, is that the product/service they provide is superb.

They mount your printed image with a special adhesive to a double layer of thin aluminum with a PVC core in between. This material guarantees extraordinary stiffness and a very even surface. As an additional protective layer, the image receives a laminated finish to protect it from the elements and from UV damage. Both matte and glossy images can be mounted on aluminum dibond (and the mounted image comes with hangers that allow for the image to hang frameless). Sealing the image with a layer of acrylic gives it sheen and guarantees extraordinary durability. The image is mounted behind an acrylic plate before being glued on the aluminum dibond. In addition to the increased durability, this method gives the images improved depth perception and vibrance. It sounds complicated, but the end result is fantastic. It’s clean, it looks professional, and best of all, it really brings out and enhances each photograph. Could we, as photographers, ask for anything more out of a print?

For more information, and to see how good your photographs will look printed on aluminum dibond with acrylic, visit them at www.printedart.com.

PhotographyCorner Commitment AwardUsually a couple of days before each Corner Newsletter goes out (in this case, the newsletter should be going out later today), we take a couple of minutes to recognize and award members of the Corner who have hit posting milestones over the past month. Commitment Awards are handed out to those who have shown great community dedication & commitment, and have reached a specific post-count milestone (1k, 2k, 5k and 10k). We have two members receiving awards this month: MedicGreg, and drc928. It took Greg just over 5 years to reach the 2,000 post milestone (who actually hit it a month ago), and Damon got to the 1k mark in a little under 2.5 years (both on a steady pace of just over 1 post/day!). Thanks for your dedication and commitment to making PhotographyCorner an awesome online destination for photographers!

The First 2011 Photograph of the Month Winner Is...

January 2011 Photograph of the MonthThe first Photograph of the Month victory of 2011, an untitled photograph by Danielle_T, easily won the majority of the votes, with over 1/3rd of the total votes. As always, you can check out the final voting results in the voting thread (here). This not only marks the first PotM win of 2011, but also the first PotM for Danielle Tunstall, a UK photographer with a unique portfolio (which can be viewed in full on her website www.danielletunstall.com). While most of Danielle’s photographs are “portraits,” they tend to have a dark and disturbing feel to them; “I don’t do my work to shock or gore for gores sake, I’m simply making visual comments on life and the human species. The evening news is far more upsetting than anything I could ever produce - and that is fact. My work is purely fiction based on reality,” comments Danielle on her photography.

The contest was sponsored by the Lead Sponsor of the PhotographyCorner.com 2010 Photograph of the Year contest: PrintedArt. This marks the 4th Photograph of the Month contest sponsored by PrintedArt, who have donated over $1,000 in prizes so far. PrintedArt is an online collection of emerging and established fine art photography sold as finished artwork on advanced display material such as acrylic and aluminum dibond. Photographers can also use the PrintedArt photolab to print their own work on the same modern display material. Since Danielle is a Premiere Member, she will receive a production of their photograph on aluminum dibond with acrylic finish (maximum length or height of 20 inches - a $150 value).

If you haven’t already, make sure to drop by the award thread to congratulate Danielle on her first Photograph of the Month victory!

Cast Your Vote for the 1st PotM of 2011

As 2010 comes to a close with the excitement of the 2010 Photograph of the Year contest, it’s easy to look past some of the other contests going on around the Corner (one of the reasons we’re taking a couple weeks off from the Contest Corner Challenges). Don’t look past the January 2011 Photograph of the Year contest, though - there are 15 fantastic photographs up for the title of the 1st Photograph of the Year in 2011. Take a look at the whittled down, nominated photographs in the January 2011 PotM Photo Gallery. Once you’ve browsed through the photos, head on over to the voting thread to cast your vote before 2:30am EST (7:30am GMT) on Tuesday, January 4th, 2010.

The contest is being sponsored by the Lead Sponsor of the PhotographyCorner.com 2010 Photograph of the Year contest: PrintedArt. If the winner is a Premiere Member, they will receive a production of their photograph on aluminum dibond with acrylic finish (maximum length or height of 20 inches - a $150 value). If the winner is not a Premiere Member, they will receive a production of their photograph on aluminum dibond with acrylic finish (maximum length or height of 15 inches - a $90 value).

Voting started a couple of days late this month due to the holidays, so we’ve extended voting a couple extra days until January 4th. Don’t let the voting days slip away, though - cast your vote today (and the winner will be announced on January 4th!).

The Albino Stare is the January 2010 PotM

January 2010 Photograph of the Month - The Albino Stare by Brad VVoting took place last week, and yesterday, Brad V was announced as the winner of the January 2010 Photograph of the Month contest with his photograph “The Albino Stare.” The photograph was taken at Reptilia, a reptile zoo in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada (just like Brad’s first PotM win - the April 2009 Photograph of the Month).

You can view all the nominated photographs in the January 2010 Photograph of the Month Photo Gallery, and see the final voting results in the voting thread. The contest was sponsored by our friends at DayMen Photo Marketing, and because Brad is a Premiere Member, he has been awarded a Lowepro Topload Zoom 2 Camera bag and 10 PhotographyCorner Pens.

Make sure to drop by the award thread to congratulate Brad on his second Photograph of the Month victory.

Vote for the First PotM of 2010

It seems a little counter-intuative, but around the Corner, we vote for the Photograph of the Month the week before the month starts. So the last week of May, we vote on the June Photograph of the Month, the last week of August we vote on the September Photograph of the Month, so therefore, since it’s the last week of December, we’re currently casting our ballots for the January 2010 Photograph of the Month. The logic is that the winner of the vote (albeit from photographs posted in the previous month) will have their photograph displayed in the month they won the contest. So the winner of the January 2010 Photograph of the Month contest, while voted on in the last week of December 2009, will actually be displayed on the homepage of PhotographyCorner for the entire month of January 2010. Makes sense, right?
