Video Corner #66: The Orton Effect in Photoshop

The “Orton Effect” is a technique created by Vancouver Island photographer Michael Orton (pre-computer post-processing, I might add) that gives photographs a dreamy, surreal feel to them (great for romantic photographs, baby photographs, etc). Initially this technique involved taking 2 separate photographs - a normal one and a slightly over-exposed and out of focus one, then sandwiching them together in the darkroom. Now, with programs like Adobe Photoshop, we can easily create the “Orton Effect” using one photo and a couple of quick adjustments (see the Corner Resources Center for a tutorial on Simulating an Orton Slide Sandwich). The video below walks us through two different methods of achieving the “Orton Effect” in Adobe Photoshop.
