Happy 10th Birthday PhotographyCorner!

Happy Birthday PhotographyCorner

Can you believe, 10 - TEN - years ago today, PhotographyCorner was born. TEN YEARS! That’s ANCIENT in Internet years. That’s older than Twitter… and Facebook! We’ve been around for a while, that’s for sure. 32,000 members, over 3/4 million posts in over 100,000 threads - we’re still going strong!

If you’ve been a part of the community since the beginning, or just joined recently, you’re one of the main reasons PhotographyCorner is still a fantastic online destination for photographers. Pat yourself on the back!

And join me in wishing PhotographyCorner 10th birthday wishes in the comments. Here’s to another 10!

2013 Corner Fund Raiser Final Update

A little over two months ago, we announced a fund raiser here on the Corner with a goal to raise $4,800 which would help pay for all the server costs for another year+. Sponsorship and advertising revenue is down, but the costs to run this site continue to climb. While sponsors and advertisers do help to cover some of the day-to-day operating costs of the Corner, to keep our photography community chugging along, we needed to raise above and beyond what the Corner makes in standard advertising.

To those that have already donated, THANK YOU SO MUCH for supporting the Corner. If you haven’t had a chance to make a donation, you can still do so here. To date, we’ve raised $1,220 of our $4,800 goal, leaving us $3,580 short. We offered a bunch of prizes once the goal of $4,800 was met, but unfortunately we failed to hit that goal (though I’ll still be sending out the PhotographyCorner pens). If you haven’t already, PLEASE consider making a donation today.

Also, please take a minute to browse through the usernames of those who have made a donation - their usernames and donation amounts are listed at the bottom of the page here. These are the people that care enough about the community to donate their hard earned money to keep this place running. If you don’t have the ability to make a donation, at least take the time to thank these people for supporting the photography community you love.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support the Corner. Hopefully we can continue to raise money to keep this place alive and running smoothly.

Vote for the 2011 Photograph of the Year: Final Round

It’s down to the final stretch. Crunch time. We’ve narrowed down over 225 photos to 30 (congrats to the 30 photographs that have photos in the final voting round!). Now we have to whittle down those 30 to 10. 10 photographers will walk home (ok, we’ll technically mail the prizes out) with over $10,000 in prizes (and the 1st-overall winner with $3,250 in prizes!). But before we get to the prizes, we need you to vote on the photos.

Every year, I am blown away by the quality of entries we receive. Even if you’re not a member of the Corner, or don’t want to vote, take some time to browse through the 30 photographs in the 2011 Photograph of the Year Photo Gallery - the photos are outstanding. And don’t forget about our fantastic group of sponsors, including Depositphotos and SmugMug, so be sure to browse through all the sponsors in the sponsors list here and thank them for sponsoring the contest here.

The final voting round ends at approximately 4:00pm EST on Thursday, January 26th, 2011 (9:00pm GMT). So once you’ve browsed through the entries in the 2011 Photograph of the Year Photo Gallery, head on over to the voting thread in the forums to cast your vote.

Good luck to everyone in the final voting round - and congratulations to everyone that has participated so far this year - it’s been an amazing contest (now go vote already!).

Check Out (and Vote On!) the Entries for the 2011 PotY Contest!

We received almost 500 entries for the PhotographyCorner.com 2011 Photograph of the Year contest - the most to date I believe - and after all the photos were checked to make sure they stuck to the rules, 226 of them are up and ready to be voted on. Due to the number of entries, we’ll do voting in 2 rounds. For Round 1, which runs from January 11th, 2012 to January 18th, 2012, the entries have been split up into 10 different groups of 23/22. The top three photographs in each Group (the three photographs that receive the most votes) will be placed into the final round where they will be voted on to decide the 10 prize winners. In the event of a tie, both photographs will move to the final round.

This year we have over $10,000 in prizes to hand out, including a grand prize worth $3,250!! Check out the stunning list of prizes on the PhotographyCorner.com 2011 Photograph of the Year Prizes page. We’ve got a fantastic group of sponsors, including Depositphotos and SmugMug, so be sure to browse through all the sponsors in the sponsors list here and thank them for sponsoring the contest here.

Make sure you vote in each group during round 1 of the voting process so that all 226 photos get a fair chance. If you have any questions specifically about the voting process, please ask them here (If you have any other questions about the contest, please ask them in the designated discussion thread).

Voting will be secret (ie. no one will know who you voted for, and the results of the vote will not be displayed until after the voting period has ended). You can only vote once in each group, and you must have 5 posts on the forum (including gallery comments) in order for your vote to count. Also, all photographs are anonymous, so please do not identify if you are the photographer of a specific photograph, or if you know which photographer took a certain photograph. You can, of course, vote for your own photograph if you wish.

Here are the links to each of the photo galleries and the polls. You have until January 18th to vote in Round 1.

You’ve got 226 photos to wade through, so what are you waiting for? Check out the entries and cast your vote here!

Happy Holidays from the Corner (with Bonus!)

For many of us in the Corner community (and around the world), we’re right smack in the middle of the holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus, whatever). Of course, around the Corner that also means that we’re in the middle of our annual Photograph of the Year contest. I’ve received hundreds on entries so far (I’m still working my way through them, so you will get a response from me eventually to let you know if your entry was accepted or not) and I can’t wait to show them all to you when voting starts in a couple of weeks.

One of the neat things about the contest this year is that Premiere Members can grab some bonus prizes (take a look at the prize list here)! If you want to have the opportunity to win some of the prizes, you have to be a Premiere Member. Lucky for you, from now until January 6th (when entries are due for the 2011 Photograph of the Year contest), you can get a Lifetime Premiere Membership (either level 1 or level 2), for HALF PRICE!! Not only are you giving yourself an opportunity to win bigger and better prizes (not only in the Photograph of the Year contest, but also in the Contest Corner Challenges and the Photograph of the Month contests), but you’re also supporting the site!

So if you’re not a Premiere Member yet, now is the best time to become one - at HALF PRICE! Click here to become a Premiere Member today.

Thanks to all those that continue to support the Corner with donations, and thanks to those who are already Premiere Members - you are really the heart of the community, and I am very thankful for each and every one of you. If you’re not part of the Premiere Member fold yet, I encourage you to become one today. Happy Holidays from all of us at the Corner.

Announcing the PhotographyCorner.com 2011 Photograph of the Year Contest

I love this time of year. Sure, there’s the snow (at least up here in Canada), and the Christmas lights and holiday parties and all that good stuff, but for the past 5 years, it’s also meant it’s time for the PhotographyCorner.com Photograph of the Year contest! And it’s back on, baby!

This year we have over $10,000 in prizes to hand out, including a grand prize worth $3,250!! Check out the stunning list of prizes on the PhotographyCorner.com 2011 Photograph of the Year Prizes page. We’ve got a fantastic group of sponsors, including Depositphotos and SmugMug, so you’re not going to want to miss this one (make sure to browse through all the sponsors in the sponsors list here).

All of the info for the contest is listed (or linked to) on the main contest page - so make sure to bookmark it and head back there throughout the contest. But basically, here’s the low down:

  • You can enter any photograph you want (Premiere Members can enter 2!), as long as it was taken in 2011.
  • You have to have a PhotographyCorner account (obviously) with at least 5 posts (if you don’t have an account yet, register for one here).
  • No over manipulation (no HDR, selective color, signature, borders, etc).
  • Images must be submitted by January 6th, 2012, and voting will begin on January 11th (we do voting in 2 rounds: first the images get split up into a number of groups, and the winners of those groups move on to the final round). The winners (yes, we give prizes to the top 10 finalists!) will be announced after voting is complete at the end of January.
  • Make sure to read the Rules before sending in a submission (I rejected over 150 entries last year alone!).
  • Before Submitting a Photograph, make sure you are aware of what pieces of information are required with your submission (explained on the How to Submit a Photograph page), as well as what limitations there are as to what photographs can be submitted.
  • Over $10,000 in prizes available to be won - check out the full prize list here (note: certain prizes are only available for Premiere Members to win - get more information on becoming a Premiere Member here)

Now you know what I’ve been working on the past couple of months, eh? It’s your turn to get to work going through all the photos you’ve taken in 2011 and deciding which one you’re going to enter (or if you’re a Premiere Members, which two you’re going to enter).

Before you start searching through your photographs, though, browse through the list of prizes and the sponsors that are providing those prizes, and make sure to head over to the forum to thank the sponsors for donating over $10,000 in prizes. We’ve set up a specific thread for you to say thanks - before you enter a photograph, make sure you’ve dropped a quick post in there. Of course, if you have any questions, we have a specific place set up for you to ask them as well - head on over to this thread in the forum to ask them.

Looking forward to hundreds on fantastic entries for the PhotographyCorner.com 2011 Photograph of the Year Contest!!!

More Prizes for the 2011 Corner Fund Raiser

Last week we announced the 2011 Corner Fund Raiser with a goal to raise $3,500 towards a new server for the site, as well as for the development of a mobile app (iPhone & Android) for the Corner forums. So far we’ve had 18 people step up and raise $600 (a little over 17% of the way there). Check out the list of people that have donated so far here. That’s a great start, but we still have quite a ways to go ($2,900). Have you donated yet? What’s holding you back?

As an added incentive, we’ve added some new prizes to the mix from some of our generous sponsors. What? Prizes you say? Check out the details:
The Prizes
Once the goal of $3,500 (well, $3,603, but I’ve got us started with the first $103) has been reached, we’ll put all the entries into a randomizer and draw for the prizes:

That’s over $1,000 in prizes up for grabs!!! If you’re an active member of the site, we’d really appreciate it if you donated a little bit towards this fund raiser. There are over 25 prizes up for grabs… so it’s not only a fund raiser, it’s a raffle! Get your donation in and let’s get a new server, a mobile app, and give away some prizes!!

It's Your Turn to Help with the 2011 Corner Fund Raiser

We’ve talked about it in the forums already, and now it’s time to take some action. Our server is getting old (over 65 in computer years!) and we need a new one - badly. In addition, as mobile computing because more and more popular, we’d like to be able to create an iPhone/Android app that you can download (for free) to browse the Corner a little easier. Unfortunutely, the cost of both upgrading the server and producing and releasing an app is fairly expensive. Advertising does cover most of the day-to-day operating costs of the Corner, but these upgrades/addtions are going to cost above and beyond what the Corner makes in standard advertising. Luckily, as an active member of the Corner, you can help.

We have a goal to raise $3,500 (US dollars), which will pay for all the server upgrades, as well as the increased monthly costs of the new server for the next year+. In addition, your donations will allow for the production and release of a PhotographyCorner iPhone/Android app (which will be available for FREE).

You can read through all the details of the fund raiser here on the 2011 Corner Fund Raiser page: where the money will be spent, who’s donated so far, and what you can win if you donate. Wait, what? There are prizes, too? Of course!

Thanks to some of our favorite sponsors (Tamron, Lowepro and Acme Made so far…), we have some prizes to give away to those that donate to the cause! If you donate $25, you get 1 entry, $50 gets you 3 entries, $100 gets you 8 entries, $250 gets you 25 entries, and $500 gets you 100 entries! Once we’ve raised the $3,500, I’ll throw all the entries into an randomizer, and send out some prizes (we’ve got over a dozen prizes so far - check out the fund raising page for details!). In addition, everyone that donates something gets their name listed down at the bottom of the fund raising page, and the eternal thanks and gratitude from the rest of the community.

You can make donations via PayPal by credit card, PayPal and even check. Decide how much you can help out, and click the “Pay Now” button at the bottom of the fund raising page.

Can we hit our goal of $3,500 by the end of May? Make your donation today!

Do You "Like" the Corner?

You’ve been asking for it (well, at least the moderators have been asking for it), and the Facebook “Like” buttons are finally here at the Corner. On the homepage and blog pages:

PhotographyCorner Facebook Like Buttons

and at the top and bottom of each thread:

PhotographyCorner Facebook Like Buttons

PhotographyCorner Facebook Like Buttons

So if you like the Corner, give us a “like.” And if you like a thread, give it a good ol’ Facebook thumbs up. It’s a great way to show that you like thread, and a neat way to share some good photography with your friends on Facebook.
