Video Corner #68: Split-Toning in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

The term “split-toning” actually comes from the good ol’ wet darkroom, where the toner acted only on certain areas of the print, the middle or low values, while leaving the rest of the print with no color change. Today’s ‘Photoshop Monday’ Video Corner looks at duplicating the split-toning technique using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. This technique works especially well when printing black and white images on color printers. Read more »

Video Corner #66: The Orton Effect in Photoshop

The “Orton Effect” is a technique created by Vancouver Island photographer Michael Orton (pre-computer post-processing, I might add) that gives photographs a dreamy, surreal feel to them (great for romantic photographs, baby photographs, etc). Initially this technique involved taking 2 separate photographs - a normal one and a slightly over-exposed and out of focus one, then sandwiching them together in the darkroom. Now, with programs like Adobe Photoshop, we can easily create the “Orton Effect” using one photo and a couple of quick adjustments (see the Corner Resources Center for a tutorial on Simulating an Orton Slide Sandwich). The video below walks us through two different methods of achieving the “Orton Effect” in Adobe PhotoshopRead more »

Video Corner #64: How to Create HDR Images in Photoshop

Today’s ‘Photoshop Monday’ Video Corner looks at the popular technique simply known as “HDR” (High Dynamic Range). HDR is a technique that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight. The tutorial today uses Adobe Photoshop CS3, but the techniques used should work in Adobe Photoshop CS2 through CS4, and can also be duplicated in some other image processing programs. Read more »
