I am starting a new mod for half-life 2 that will be called high definition. It will be a game that will compare to games 5 years from now. In Order for me to make a game like this i need a person to take photographs of various surfaces up close to create textures from. The Photographer will be listed in the development team. The mod will no doubt be listed in good pc gaming magazines most definetly "PC Gamer". I would like it if the person lived in a large town or city and owned a very good camera like a 1ds mark II. Overall the person with the best camera wins this position in the team. I will keep my eye on this topic feel free to pm me or e-mail me at Rhodeder@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Derek

this is possibly the most retarded post ever

the person w/ the best camera wins? good cameras do NOT take good photos, the people holding them do.

i shoot medium format film and can have 100+ mb tiff files scanned... how's that for the best quality?

what are you offering in regards to pay?

Scanning pictures in comparasion to high resolution digital photos have a large difference in quality. This job is for a person who is willing to do this just for the joy of taking photographs. There is no pay for this job it is just for the joy of being on the team and doing the photography work. This isnt a full time job it is just for those who would enjoy doing something like this on there free time. I will not accept scanned photos. I need a good digital camera for this.

and btw a mod is never a budgeted project because you can never sell it. A mod is made to give you a good name and for fun.

umm right - so you want someone w/ an $8000 camera to simply give you publishing rights to their work?

additionally, you obviously have little knowledge of how scanning works, the art that goes into it or how it compares to digital. i am an it tech for one of the largest privatly owned camera shops in the us, we have more then $1.5 million dollars worth of scanners and printers in the building and i will play the "is this digital or film" game with you all day long and you will NOT be able to tell the difference, both on a computer monitor and in prints.

some info for you - a properly scanned 35mm negative or slide = about 16mp - the only camera on the market know that can touch that for resolution is the eos 1ds mkII. 120/220 film scans, again, done properly on quality equipment (we have all noritsu scanners) will output roughly a 24mp file, file size will vary depending on compression settings and file formats, but can very well exceed 100mb.

your "need" for digital is out of ignorance to that of film scans.

i also highly doubt you need the file size output of a 1ds mkII for games... ive sold stock photos via istockphoto.com to game moders who have used them just fine w/ great detail in them under the 5mp mark

a mod is made to give you a good name

i already have a good name in photography, i will not give my services up for "fun"

you want quality, pay for it

Eh , heres an article bout how the most megapixels, doesnt always mean the best.

as said above you want quality, not quanity.

I want to see you to show me a scan of a film that gets this kind of quality and also on a compressed jpeg that was scanned at this high of a resolution.

The quality is much much more superb than a film scan. I scanned good film negatives at 9200 dpi and it becomes blurry as you get closer. There is absolutely no sharpness at all. Im not asking for a full time job for you to do. All i need is someone with a good "digital" camera to take about 2 photos of surfaces a week. Im not getting paid to make this Game Modification and i definetly cannot afford to pay a person to help make it. All i want is someone who has a nice digital camera like anywhere from a eos 20d to a 1ds Mark II to help out a non-profit game development team.

Hrm gee, 9200 dpi, and that "you" scaned it, sounds like someone belives everything on the box, thats called interpolation duh. Also a scan of something like Kodak Gold isnt going to scan much past 3 megapixels. Learn your stuff.

Also if you need surfaces and yer cheap... yer not going to be able to afford a photographer, goto istockphoto.com and pick out some you like for a dollar.

its a nice shot, but only the eyes are in focus, you are aware of this right? her tiera is out of focus and the whites are blown out by that point.

its also not an out of camera shot. take a look at the exif data, the shooter has some pretty heavily modded custom functions to his / her camera and no doubt shot in raw and did a good deal of post processing in cs2 or capture one software.

btw... a jpg is a compressed file by nature, raw, tiff, bmp are all uncompressed file formats.

as far as a film scan, a quality film like fuji 160nps or npc rated @ 120 in the studio setting that photog shot at would yield nearly identical results in every manor, and to get it digital, yes there is an art to scanning... not just chucking a print on a flat bed and cranking the dpi to the highest setting... you also need to run ice and noise surpress it

for what you want, a p&s digital will work fine, if you don't have one, spend a buck on istockphoto.com and get some photos. gas is $3/gallon and going up, im not driving anywhere for free to take pix for you. my dsl bill is $35/month... im not uploading photos to you for free.. while the digital files my camera outputs might not cost anything, the camera and all my gear has, traveling costs money as well as wear and tear and above and beyond that, my experiance and talent should b by now worth something... if my day rate is $1000 and im booking weddings at $1500, clearly someone out there thinks my time is worth something

Darn - I shoot with Nikon gear I guess that disqualifies me. ;)

Do a google on wet mounted drum scans. Look at any image galleries they might have on those sites. Then perhaps you may gain a new respect for the scanning process.

If you still need somebody pm me. I'll check with my son and see if he'd be interested. He's a big time gamer and he might do it for you although he doesn't use Canon gear either ;)
