Guys,

A co-worker of mine has asked me to take a couple of shots of his seven year old daughter this weekend. I may end up taking thirty-six shots. After recieving the developed film, He will decide what shots he wants to have enlarged. I was wondering what to charge for this service.

Have you done this before? If not, are you looking to go professional?
Do you just want your costs covered?
Do you want to make a profit?
Including the photos in your portfolio, website, print ad, etc?

I'm looking to go professional. I've done a few weddings and much event photography for profit. I want to cover the cost of film, development and my time.

They should obviously pay for the film, D&P to 6x4 and then the costs of having their favourites enalarged to 10x8 (or whatever size they have in mind) Basically they pay all of the material expenditure.
Now, with regard to your time. I'm assuming that they are a friend or at least a close acquaintance, so this isn't necessarily a commerical venture. It's almost more like you doing them a good turn. I doubt the pictures will take that long to do and to be honest I wouldn't ask for payment. I would expect them to either give me a bottle of wine or something similar out of good manners and then leave it at that.
Who knows someday I might want them to do me a good turn like look after my dog while I'm on vacation etc. In these friendly situations I do find a dirty thing like money can sour things.....maybe thats because I'm British and we don't talk about things like that lol!
In any case I'm sure they will let you add these pictures to your professional portfolio, which could come in handy if you'd like to turn pro.

Your right. I wasn't expected a huge lump of money. The cost of the materials is fine. I didn't fall in love with photography hoping I'd get rich.
