I was wondering what is the best computer system for a photographer? Is it a mac the best or is it just what people have gotten use to using?

Thanks

The new Power Macs (http://www.apple.com/powermac/) and Aperture (http://www.apple.com/aperture/) are incredible.

Get a PowerMac Quad with a nice Apple Cinema Display. Stack it with 3Gb of RAM, and get Aperture. Your all set!

Before you can decide on which pc/mac you would like, it all depends on how much $$$$$$ you want to spend. - You can get a decent set up for under 1,000 or you can spend $4000 or even more for the lastest greatest.

Apple computers are designed for the arts, they are the best for that niche, I think all design and graphic companies us Apple

I use both mac and pc. Honestly the mac is 99% hype. It is no more stable then a pc running XP and for the most part both run the programs you will need. The workflow system on a mac is more geared to photo/video processing, which is a benefit as a mac will process photos faster then a pc of the same speed. However PC's are also signifigantly cheaper, so it really ends up being close to a wash.

I use both and like both for their respective advantages. I do prefer my mac for photo processing, but it is not something that I couldn't live without. You are going to pay more for a mac, and possibly have to learn a new OS, but you will gain some convience.

If you can afford the mac you will probably be happy with it, but don't expect it to be some miracle compared to your pc. If you liked the blue screen of death on PC, you will love the flying pizza of death on macs.

Ya...but it is true...

I am going to agree with the above posts. I built custom gaming PCs for about 6 years. Since I was 13! I really got into when i was around 16-17, building them for people and selling them. I USED to be a big PC guy. The price advantage was definitely on PC's side; which was nice because of the specs I was asked to make sure the PCs I built has in them. I bought a PowerBook around December of 2004 and haven't looked back. I still miss the speed and power that I was capable of putting into a PC, especially when building a machine designed to be overclocked. Although, for graphic and sound editing, the mac is nice. Like CDeyoe said, the workflow is very nice on a Mac. Really, the mac is just all about convenience. And, like it has been said before: it all comes down to cost. If you are willing to spend the cash on a Mac set-up, then go for it, and you will like it. Although, if you need something just as quick. Either build a PC yourself, or have one built, run Photoshop, and you got a nice set-up there, for less than a comparable Mac.

Don't for get about repair. I'll take repairing a PC over a Mac anyday! When they switch to intel, could be a whole different story. ;-)

i saw a show on tv where they put two computers, an apple and a pc of equal spec, well as equal as you can get and stuck on photoshop and ran a few processes on pictures and timed them, the pc beat the apple big time, no longer is apple the designers choice, HT tech and cheaper componants has changed all that, tho thats just my 2 cent and i'm a noob(don't wanna make enemies with the imac posse JUST yet)
