an idea

I want to get my name out here, but I havn't lived here very long, I dont go to church or anything so I dont know many people, There is a store across from me that I go to alot and one of the girls who works there has a small baby, I was thinking of asking her if I could do a few photos of him, I think I want to give her an 8x10 for free, call it a portfolio building session, do you think that would be a good idea, and if so how should I go about asking her?

Sure it would be a great idea.

Just ask her. Tell her she has a beautiful Baby. Invite her to have her picture take for free, and promise her a free 8 x 10.

Have her sign a model release.

What can she say? Yes or no right. Either way you are no worse off than now.

What can it hurt.

Jennifer, Just ask her! She'll probably be very flattered. I've done about 5 shoots in the past 5-6 weeks, and I've told my subjects (mostly co-workers and friends) that I'm trying to build a portfolio. I haven't charged anyone YET, but when I give them the CD with their photos on it (so they can pick whichever ones they want to print), along with a simple copyright release which basically says I own the intellectual property rights to the photos, but gives them permission to print or electronically transmit the photos, I tell them I intend to print a couple of what I think are the very best ones for my portfolio. No one has had any problem with that. Good Luck!!

I made a print out that I am taking to my daughters pre school and a few other places.
It says...
Jennifer bla bla bla portfolio building special
#####phone now through bla bla bla book your portrait session a bla bla value, and receive one complimentry 5x7 print.
special is limited so call and book your session now!
)and in smaller print it says) all sessions will require a model release..
So what do ya think???? minus all the bla bla bla's :)

Well it worked, I have got 2 appointments today, I put these out today!!

Congratulations, Jennifer. Word of mouth is the cheapest advertising you can get. Once I did shoots for a couple of my co-workers and they showed others their pics, 4 more people asked me to take photos for them.
