Tim L. Walker January 5th, 2005, 04:54 AM I've got a couple of buddies from work that are looking to get a 10d to do mostly modelling photography - they want the 20d, but can't really afford it, and I know they're getting harder to find, but if found, they should be at a good price now, I would assume. Anyone know of a good place to get one (that at least ships to Canada)? For those of you that have one, what lenses would you recommend they pick for it as well, in your experience?
Kara January 5th, 2005, 05:11 AM I believe BH still sells them, I havent checked the price for a while but if your buying body only its only a couple hundread difference these days.
herins January 5th, 2005, 05:22 AM The Camera Store in Calgary has some used 10Ds in stock for 1450$ right now.
drlynn January 5th, 2005, 06:06 AM Do you feel lucky? Digital Liquidators (www.digitalliquidators.com) has the 10D advertised for $749.99 USD and the 20D for $1129.99 USD.
They are Checkrated by Popular Photography Mag, which means that they have "secret shoppers" buy stuff from them every so often to make sure their ads are legit.
Keep in mind that their stock is probably gray market.
Tim L. Walker January 5th, 2005, 06:19 AM Hmmm... yeah. I checked BH already... listed as discontinued. :( Probably want to avoid gray market stuff... probably fine, but just never sits well with me.
drlynn January 5th, 2005, 06:24 AM I know what you mean. 90-95% of the time, you're gonna be fine, but that other 5-10% is gonna be a major headache.
Tim L. Walker January 5th, 2005, 06:30 AM Exactly... and I would feel bar recommending that, too. What would be the disadvantages, if any, of getting a model of camera that is being discontinued, like the 10d?
ohenry January 5th, 2005, 07:55 AM No real disadvantages. It's still a great camera. Just been replaced by a newer and better model.
Tim L. Walker January 5th, 2005, 12:35 PM ... and more expensive. ;)
ohenry January 5th, 2005, 03:15 PM Well, the new one sells for the same price the old one did :)
I'm thinking about selling mine and going with the 20D, but waiting to see what happens at PMA
DDAY January 5th, 2005, 04:14 PM Adorama has them new for $1099.95. They are also posting a $100.00 rebate. Says USA in the ad so I assume it's not gray market stuff. I've bought equipment from them before with no problems.

Tim L. Walker January 6th, 2005, 12:37 AM Thanks for the links! :D
GerryDavid January 6th, 2005, 03:47 AM What exactly is grey market? Camera's intended for europe but are being sold in north america instead? exact same camera, made by canon? just not being sold for the intended country?
Is there any way to tell if its grey market or not? I presume the country specified in the warrenty would be the clue.
ohenry January 6th, 2005, 04:01 AM Grey market equipment is equipment that has been imported by the seller. It is generally the identical equipment, but was marketed for international sales. In some cases, the instruction manuals are in a language that may not be familiar to you. In all cases, the US warranty is not included. Any warranty work is handled via the retailer. The only real way that I know of that you can tell is that you don't get the US warranty when you purchase it. Since you're in Canada, US warranties may be meaningless as the International warranty would be good (I'm not sure on this point though). If you're dealing with a reputable dealer, buying grey market is generally a safe bet, but there are a ton of unscrupulous dealers out there that strip the accessories from the box (i.e. battery, strap, charger, etc) and resell them at inflated prices. It's the classic case of "buyer beware". Know your retailer!
GerryDavid January 6th, 2005, 04:11 AM I wont be buying the dslr until im in the states, I dont want to even think what the duties on a 20d would be. :0)
www.computers.com has a list of sellers and they range from $1100 to $1500 for the 10d I think, and not sure about the 20d, I was just wondering if the ones located in brooklyn might be selling grey market. Ill probably end up getting it from a company on that list that has 4/4 stars *or is it 5/5 stars?*.
ohenry January 6th, 2005, 04:46 AM Brooklyn is better known as "crooklyn". Many fly by night shops there. Be vary wary.
BH photo is good and I do 90% of my business with them.
GerryDavid January 6th, 2005, 04:53 AM Someone on the photo forum just got the 20d from Willoughby's in NYC, NY, established in 1898 according to the website.
On computers.com their price is just slightly above the lowest by maybe $35us and its got 4/4 or 5/5 stars. And by the time I get around to getting it, this guy would have had his and given feedback on them.
http://www.willoughbys.com/shop/Product.asp?Sku=2050CAN20D
$1335us, no lense.
ohenry January 6th, 2005, 05:10 AM I don't know anything about them, but the price is over $100 cheaper than BH Photo (BH is not always the cheapest, but very competitive). BH has them at $1445 for just the body (US warranty). If you're not in a hurry, you might wait until after Feb PMA to see if there's a price drop or product announcement. Nikon recently dropped prices and that may trigger action from Canon.
Tim L. Walker January 6th, 2005, 05:24 AM Yeah, that's true.
kixphotography January 6th, 2005, 05:18 PM for what it's worth, especially in price comparission....there's these jerk offs
