Flash Used?

I would like to know what kind of flash I need to achieve this look in the photos.
Only one flash was used for these two shots.

What kind? Maybe a 580EX? Try posting in photog. 101

The type of flash is irrelevant. The placement of the light and the exposure is far more important than the type of equipment. Although only one flash was used, did the artist mention reflectors used?

Besides, looking at the EXIF data, it's been through Photoshop CS2. It's not that difficult to fabricate light and manipulate it as desired.

Well, I went on a different shoot with the same photographer all he used was the flash with the reflector attatched to the flash.

What's a 580EX? I'm still pretty new to lighting. I usually use natural light along with a reflector.

Did you consider going to the source?

it looks like an off camera flash maybe a softbox and they flagged it off at the bottom or did it in processing. but like ohenry said it is more placement than what you are using.

When you say "source," do you mean the photographer?
I already asked him and I didn't get a reply.

580EX is a Canon flash, their top-of-the-line dedicated flash unit for EOS cameras.

Here, I'd say whatever he used was underpowered. You can get the same effect with a low-power strobe, a high-power one dialed down manually, or studio lights with a modifier (I'd use a snoot) focused on the face. It does look really heavily processed as well, so don't expect exactly this look out of the camera.

Light control is a science and art that takes years to master - have fun with it! I'm still a rank novice after years of work with both strobe and incandescent light.

The backdrop looks like a jetty in Galveston

More important than the lighting he used, ask him why the bizarre pose in the second shot?

It looks a bit like the model was struck with sudden heartburn at the same time a severe sphincter cramp hit.

:rotflmao: Geez, I was trying to come up with a way to describe that. I'd just about decided it was some odd, severe form of constipation, if it could be described at all.
