The Maxxum 7 is an awesome camera! It has a lot of bells and whistles you probably won't use for a while, but eventually you'll be glad you went with a more advanced camera if you really want to get serious.

The 7000 and 7xi are older Minolta bodies. The 7000 came out first, then the 7xi. I couldn't really give a list of differences, but all seem to be dependable cameras.

If I was buying, tho, I'd go with the 7. It is really a pro quality camera with a consumer price tag.

Gareth, the only problem with you list is a few of those aren't in the same class.

The 7 sits on a near pro level with the maxxum 9, while the 70 (not even equipped with a PC sync port) is obviously not in that class.

True on dates however.

The maxxum 7 is one good camera! I was initally going to get one myself, however put the money towards other gear.

As mentioned previously, tons of things you'll not use for quite a while. It's a good, solid camera. Just two years ago it was at the cheapest, $700 US, now can be found for $350 US or less, that's new!

I started with a Maxxum 5, still use it on a ton of paid jobs and just in field playing. I like the compactness feel and light weight it has. True, the 7 will have other options not available on the 5. Faster shutter speeds, better focusing areas/ more focus area points, etc.
