It depends on your budget primarily. Other factors may be what you want to shoot and all that.

What's the budget? Point & shoot or dSLR?

A point 'n' shot will be nice for you, i suppose. Later when you overcome it you may consider one of those SLR or SLR - like cameras.

No budget? Do you have a price range at all? They will range in price from about $1000 to $10,000+

I guess i would want one thats $1,000 to $2,000. but the price really doesn't matter.

If $'s not really an object, I'd personally recommend the Nikon D2H (http://www.nikon.ca/products/d2h/) - great camera... with teh D2Hs coming out, it should drop in price right around to the $2k range, I would guess... It really depends on what you want to do with it, though. The Nikon D2X (http://www.nikon.ca/products/d2x/) is a beautiful camera in the $5k range... then you gotta add lenses on top of that. ;)

What about the Canon 350D or D70 with some nice glass? A $5k camera wont take a better picture if you have lesser quality lenses on it.

I think theres a new D70 coming out soon.

Suprisingly Id have to agree with Gerry (Shock of the century there :P )

At the end of the day, the camera you buy is just going to be the body, its the lenses you put on it your going to spend the larger amount of money on in the end.

Consider AF points and frames per second, ISO range and so forth when buying your camera body, cos you dont want to outgrow it or have it fustrate you. If you already have lens lineup this might help you decide what brand you want to go with.

In the end, research, reviews, and oh yeah, research.

The cost of the camera is one thing, but dont forget about batteries, memory, battery grip if you want it, etc. It all adds up fast. Also the camera bag.

I plan to get the body kit, couple memory cards, battery grip, 2 lenses to cover the normal range and tele range, and that will be around $1600-$1800us. And the lenses wont be extremly good glass. So it would be easy to spend more than $2000 by getting better lenses.

Just another reason not to spend all the $$ on the body, since youll need other stuff to go with it, hehe.

And then later you'll need more stuff and more stuff. No matter how you dice it, this is an expensive profession!

What camera system do you have now? If you already maintain a stable of lenses that you are happy with then upgrade your body to the latest offerring from that manufacturer. If you want to make a wholesale change to a new camera system then follow Kara's advice and determine through research which system provides the best features and performance for the type of photography that interests you.
