10D - 300D

Im looking for a 10D.

I dropped off 6 rolls of film tonight at a lab, and I think my bf is at his breaking point with developing film, so tonight we went and had a look at the 300D. Being as he is the major bread bringer homer in the family, he said he had some concerns about the build of the 300D and how plasticy it felt.

Jokingly I told him that the 10D was a magnesium alloy body (Well maybe more hint dropping than joking.) So we came home and had a look at reviews, and the dreaded pricing.

Which is where I found this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3830578077&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT)

My question - what do you think? Too good to be true?

It looks pretty legit... They even have a telephone number... That would be a sweet set up. :D

Kara:

That does look like a great deal. I've never heard of Sunshine Electronics.

So I just went to B&H and got some prices (Pt.1) and took estimates, based on prices of gear listed, on the other items that I could not be sure of brand (Pt. 2).

Part 1:

Cannon 10D ($1519.85)
Sigma 70-300 ($149)
Sigma 28-80 ($79)
CF 512 SanDisk ($74.95)
PART 1 TOTAL $1818.90

Part 2:
58mm UV ($11.25)
55mm UV ($9.45)
CF Reader ($20)
Cleaning Kit ($10)
Carry Case ($40)
Tripod ($75)
PART 2 TOTAL $165.70

Grandtotal - $1984.60
Offer - $1569.00

SAVINGS $415.60 - About 21% off from the already discounted B&H price.

Seems like a big discount to me. I imagine though if you were buying and selling in high volume this might be a great way to move goods. Lower profit on each but high volumne would make up for that. But I've never heard of these guys. I didn't notice if it was a USA warranty or not. Grey market stuff is less expensive but the retailer and US distributor won't honor any warranty on grey market stuff. You'd have to send it to Canon in Japan at your expense and I'm not sure if you'd have to pay for the repairs, if needed, or not.

You could send that ad to Canon and ask them. If you do call Sunshine's number ne sure to ask if the goods have a USA warranty or if they are grey market.

Im thinking Im going to call them on Monday. Thanks for the indepth research ;) I went through their feedback reviews, a couple of unhappy customers as usual, but is to be expected.

I would be wary of the stuff coming out of Brooklyn NY, even though they have good feedback it's probably grey market and you won't have a factory warranty.
And actually Kara I think it was you that posted the website with the pictures of all the stores in Brooklyn :P

Yah that was that site that Garion was going buy a D70 from

Dont worry, IF I even buy from them, Ill be doin a lot of googling first ;)

Out of curiosity are there any 10D owners around here?

Been doing some more looking around:

10D Package (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3829817621)

D70 Package (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48541&item=3830899366)

Is one year the standard warranty period?

What I like is that they actually give feedback to sellers. And they have 99% positive feedback. I get nervous buying from someone with less than 99%

While I was going through the feedback I found a couple of people that bought these e mails so I sent them an e mail to see what their experience was like.

I'm very iterested in what you find out! Just for information, I've never heard anyone that has broken the 300D, it's not as fragile as it feels. And with the hack it is almost as good as the 10D, and it cost much less. I've also mad some pricechecking at B&H, both packages for around $1500:

You have all come up with some good deals here. I am amazed at how low they are. I have the 10D I bought last Sept. I bought it from my local camera shop and paid $1399. for just the body. I have never been one to buy major purchases online but it looks like I should be. I love my 10D and have no complaints with it at all. My daughter bought the Rebel 300D and I honestly can't see any difference in the quality of the photos. The 300 D is a much better traveling camera because it's so much lighter. I think you'd be thrilled with either one of these.

I have no experience with the D70 but it is getting some great reviews. One of the girls in my group just bought one. She did a lot of research and decided on it. I have only seen a couple of pictures she has taken with it, but they are very nice.

Good luck on your camera hunting.

Odd, I just found this page.

You can buy the Canon 10D for $1100 off of www.computers.com, just go to the where to buy and sort by price and look for 5 stars. :0) or is it 4 stars? Either way its alot cheaper than the $1500 alternate.

But the deal that Lucian showed was nice, pretty much get the camera for that price after the rebate, and you get all the other accessories.

Although I would highly recommend a 1gb card instead of 512, expecially if you use raw mode which I plan to. :0) How fast or slow are those lenses?

Someone also mentioned about the 300D hack, but that voids warrenty, so im not sure if thats something you would want to do. Not to mention the hack doesnt give you some features the 10D can since its hardware, not software. I think some of these are more pictures in burst mode or something like that.

Also the 10D has iso 3200 as an option.

I tried out the 300D @ 100iso and 1600iso and the 1600 had alot of noise, so im wondering what its like on the 10D. The Fuji pro2 has barely any noise at 1600.

No idea - I heard back from the people I emailed tho, they said they were more than happy with the stuff they bought, but to be aware cos when you call them to confirm your order they try to upsell you into things.

I dont need to worry about that, my bf is a salesman ;)

I had one person say they didnt like the sigma lens - but they were more than happy with the whole experience and theyre loving their cameras.

Did you try to buy this ebay auction? Or do you mean you emailed the people that won the auction or previosuly won an auction from this company? And the upselling makes sense, hehe. From thier point of view at least.

And if you think about it, yoru developing costs are probably the same as the camera payments if you do enough pictures. :0)

I went back into the feedback of one of the sellers of the 10D that I was lookin at and saw how many people bought the camera. I used ebay to e mail them to see what their experience was like with the seller, and to see how they liked their purchase.

It was also USA warranty - not grey market.

With the 300D I think you gotta buy a battery grip seperate. But with the 10D I think it comes with the battery grip. So thats $100us or so that your saving that you would prob want to spend on the 300D at one point.

And from what ive read, you should buy the noname batteries and not the canon ones, since you can get them at something like 1/2 or 1/3 the cost and thier the same thing. I should find out the name of these no name batteries. Think Doxx from tpf had one listed in his for sale thread for his 10D.

Im wonderin if I should just go get somethiing like a fuji s5000 for 300-400 and then use that till I save up enough for one  - would take care of the whole developing thing, being as I have to drive into town and then go in the next day and pick them up.

Oh how slowly things move in Montana.

GerryDavid
August 7th, 2004, 03:25 AM
the fuji 5000 is nice, but its still a point and shoot more than a slr. As far as I konw you cant manually focus, its only 3mp with a small sensor, not the large sensor that is in the dslr's, and semi manual, not fully manual, unless thats been changed.

I wouldnt recommend going for the 5000 and then 10d later on since youll be loosing the money out on the 5000 or at least half to 3/4's fo hte money. Wheras if you go for the 10D, odds are youd take good care of it for years and use it for years, since you prob wont need to upgrade it any time soon since you can take huge pictures with it and it has the features youd need to do a good job. :0)

But thats just my openion.

So are you going to buy it? I love my 10D and I probably paid more than I should have for it, but with big purchases, I feel better buying it from a local store.

Kara
September 6th, 2004, 08:33 AM
Naw, I do a bit of photography WORK here and there but most of what I do I dont have to take the photos for I just use the ones off the main manufacturers sites or someone takes them at the dealership so I dont have to go all the way into town to do it

I decided that any money I make from photography can go back into photography, since it is not my main job yet. Yearning for new equipment is forcing me to take more photography jobs and get braver.
