Considering the body and glass I was working with at the time, I think these turned out fairly well...

Wow, these pictures really show how close together the blue angels fly. My family watched a documentary on the Angels a few months back. Those pilots are quite amazing. I cant wait until they come to michigan.

Raindog, those are amazing pictures. I went to an air show at Edwards AFB, CA in 2002...wish i had a good camera to capture those amazing flights. If anyone interested should visit this year on Oct. 22 & 23.

Absolutely wonderful shots. As a child, I used to see the Blue Angels perform quite frequently over the beach I was raised on. Awesome indeed.

those are great shots. I miss living in Jacksonville where they were from. After they shut down Cecil Feild the Angels moved to NC I think. Thank you for sharing.

Raindog, where did you get to see them perform? I was in Springfield, ILL just a few weeks ago to see them, but they only had 5 planes flying that day. And my shots weren't NEAR that close, but then again, it was my first time shooting fast motion. Will post my pics soon, just got them back.

Also, if i may ask, what camera and lens did you use?

Since I have an upcoming air show I plan on attending, can you share some more technical info?
shutter speed?
ISO settings?
Fstop?
panning? tripod? monopod?

And, most importantly, how did you get "correct" exposure?

I'm retired Navy and I've never been fortunate enough to see them perform live.

This October we'll have an airshow here. It'll be the third time I've seen the USAF Thunderbirds perform. This year I get to cover the event in video but I'll definitely be taking my E-20 with me.

Any more technical info?
I would appreciate knowing more about how you took them...

Thanks folks,
Sorry for the delay, I've been a bit tied up the past couple of days.

These shots were taken with a D70 and 300mm f4 Nikkor at the Fort Myers Airport. All were taken at ISO200 and f4 in aperture priority, shutter speeds varied.
I had brought along a monopod but quickly found that it was absolutely useless in this situation so all of these were taken handheld.

Keep an eye on your histogram, lighting can change at a moment's notice. Bring along at least a 300mm lens and plenty of memory. Shoot raw(a luxury I was not afforded that day) and lay on the motor drive.
Let us know how it goes.

Very nice shots. When I first saw the title 'Blue Angels' I was thinking of something else. I like your pics better.

Those photos turned out great. A very good job of caputuring them considering the speed those puppies fly at.
