Exhibition Advice

I’m looking to stage a one man exhibition in my local town, most likely in the old town Tolbooth as it has good high ceilings (about 12/14ft) and beautiful natural lighting (NE) but only from one side fortunately it’s the longest side.

The problem is there is not enough wall space to allow all the images to be hung on the walls, I was thinking of some form of staging will be needed to allow them to stand on the floor area, that means some are in natural light others in fluorescent so I will have to be careful when planning the layout.

Has anyone staged or planned an exhibition before and possibly give me some guidance on the layout and some ideas on supporting large photographs? (The prints will be on canvas or board mounts biggest about 30” x 40”)?

William, how wonderful! You must be excited. At first past I thought you were going to run naked throught the town square but luckily I read again before I posted! :D

Fluorescent light is a killer BUT at some of the shows I have been to it has been "cured" by hanging the picture a little higher and angling it down. SO, the picture sits further from the wall on the top and flush on the bottom edge.

Also, but this can be costly, one event they actually had what appeared to be spotlights set up around the room. None of the lights were actually directed directly at the pictures BUT they did provide extra lighting that wasn't harsh.

Hope you can get some ideas from that. Good luck!

Been out and about at the current Scottish Salon of Photography and very nice too. http://www.scottish-photographic-salon.org/

The lighting was all artificial mainly spotlights, and I got a few ideas on supporting the images. There is a lot of work to do, I will be going to look over the venue tomorrow to get a better feel for the lighting.

Oh and I have just ordered myself a new 44" wide Epson Pro 9600 to start printing - the new model is not due out till Dec/Jan so it was decision time, very scary.
