We need some specifics.

What is your budget? Film or digital? Point-and-shoot, or an SLR with interchangeable lenses?

Without knowing what kind of camera you want, we won't be able to give meaningful advice.

For a beginner a manual camera is best. some brands to consider are canon AE-1 or AE-1Program, Nikon FM's, Pentax, or even Olympus. You can get a good second hand camera for a reasonable price so shop around before you buy. You should also get a good standard lens (this should be included in the price of the camera). Also don't forget to get the manual as well though sometimes second hand cameras don't have the manual and you can either download it from the net or buy it from somewhere else. I suggest doing a little research on the cameras to see which one you most prefer. Happy hunting.
