I was checking out some stuff on www.dpreview.com trying to find a photography contest that has stuff on pbase *will post on this in another catagory* when I came accross some talk about the replacement of the Canon 10D, the 20D.

Im not sure if this is real, or if the 20D is even out *in north america*, from the way some threads read it sounds like its already out, but I havent heard anything about it.

But here are some links for it, for those that are interested.

And there are many threads about this over here.

the specs of 20D will be released some time in Seo, that means few more months before the product is out in the market.

The prelim spces look very good
8.2 MP with the sensor size of APS etc

hmm, 8.2 with the sensor size of an aps? is aps auto point and shoot, so a normal digital camera and not the larger sensor of a dslr? Or did I misunderstand. Cuz if it was the smaller one it woudlnt be worth getting.

APS = Advanced Photo System
Basically those tiny cameras (the ones that use Kodak Advantix or something)

8.2MP APS size sensor is the same one Canon uses in their new 1D

Ok, then thats good. :0)

I was looking up the 10D and it doesnt say if it uses usb or firewire or both to connect up to the pc. I wonder how it connects. Although for something like this it might just be easier to get a card reader.

Also it said it had a hotshoe and sync, is the sync the port that you can plug an external flash into that doesnt use a hotshoe or is it just talking about the shutter speed thing?

I wonder what speed you need to set the shutterspeed to to hook up the flash. I was looking at the 1D and 1D mark 2 or what ever its called and one is 1/250th and one is 1/500th. I assume the faster the shutter the better, within reason?

A PC-Sync is one that you can use to control studio flashes and that's probably what they are talking about. Most 'pro' or 'advanced' cameras have them.

I'm not completely sure about flash sync speeds but I'm pretty sure it is the minimum shutter speed you can use with the flash. Like the flash will sync from anywhere between 1/500 and 1+ seconds.

the sync speed of my film slr is kinda pathetic, I think its 1/125th of a second.

I was hoping the sync that they were talking about was the thing that you can plug studio flashes into so I woudlnt have to get an adapter for the hot shoe since those things are not very cheap and it would be better to have on the camera body itself.

I was looking at another site and it uses usb.

Thanks for the info rob. :0)

That's not too bad, my Minolta XG-M will only sync as fast as 1/60s. But it is at least 20 years old :P
My Fuji S602 on the other hand, will sync as fast as 1/1000th second, and it also has a PC-Sync port. I love this thing :D

actually im mistaken, I just double checked and my rebel 2000's sync speed is 1/90th of a second, and it seems my digital has 1/500th of a second which isnt to bad.

Well it sure looks real now :D

Looks like Canon has been busy with some new models like the 7.1MP PowerShot G6 (http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canong6/), and 5MP PowerShot A95 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081905canon_a95.asp)

And just to make Kara all antsy about getting a Canon digital SLR: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081907canon_efs_flash.asp

Ooh! Come on 10D's fall fall fall baby.

RobW

But those new EF-S lenses won't work on a 10D. You need a 20D now

congrats rob, just 700 more to go.

I hate to ask the price of that flash, prob $500 cdn or so.

Kara, do you really want the 10D now that the 20D is out? Maybe in a year the 20D will be down to $1200 usa.

I was looking at the iso noise of the 10D and 1600 looked pretty good, but the 3200iso didnt, I wonder if thats improved on the 20D. Also I thougth I seen the min shutter speed was 1/8000 for the 10D but it seems to be 1/4000.

Now that Ive got a neg scanner, I dont know if I need the 20D

GerryDavid

The main 2 things that appeal about the 20D is the larger mp and the increased fps, but 5 is still kinda sad compared to motor driven slr's. I may just go for the 10D, espeically if the price drops.

Is it me or is canon's model names confusing? wasnt it something like d30, d70, 10d, 20d?

Kara
August 20th, 2004, 03:27 AM
I think D70 is Nikon dork :P

GerryDavid

I was off by one number.

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canoneos20d/

The 4 listed are D30, D60, D10, D20, all canon, or so it seems.

Was I the only one who didn't know about the 20D. The guy at the camera store was telling me about it today after my husband inquired about which was gonna be my next camera. I said outloud the 10D of course. I could have cried when the guy mentioned the new 20D. It's a dream come true. Bad news is it's still 14 hundred more than I've got.

AJ, it just came out not to long ago and just a few days ago it was a rumor. Im not sure if its worth upgrading for the extra money it costs, but if I somehow magically get the money to get a dslr Id still wait till spring to see what happens with prices. the 10d should drop in price cuz of the 20d and hoepfully the 20d would also drop in price.

Its more mp, more frames per second, double the min shutter speed, well half, depends on your perspective but other than that, it seems to be the same. I wonder how the 8.2mp noise level is.

One site I read said the 10d only gives really sharp pictures with the L series glass, I was wondering what quality you would get with a kit lense or equivalent, if it woudlnt be sharp at all. Then the same prob applies to the 20d.

So im confused.

20D lenses only work on a 20D? Or can 20D use same lenses as 10D and 300D etc, but the 20D lenses cant work on 10D and 300D etc.

RobW
August 21st, 2004, 11:39 PM
EF-S lenses will only work on the 300D/Digital Rebel and the 20D. If you put an EF-S lens on another camera you will smash the mirror.
Regular EF lenses, however, will work on any Canon DSLR.

Well thats dumb :-?

or smart... depending on how you look at it. ;)

Kara

Not if you get a 20D and keep your 10D as a backup. Means your stuck buying new lenses.

Yeah, which Canon will love. :P
