Cheers guys, I'll retake the same shot on a bright day again with filters removed and I'll check to see what effect the in camera sharpening has too as I think I'm letting it do a small amount though...

A friend of mine who has a photog biz in Wigan (UK) reckons the filter might have contributed to it. It's a B&W filter though, a decent brand I thought..?

Fringing noise

What are contributory causes to fringing? This pic was taken with a Canon 28-135mm IS on an EOS350d - hopefully EXIF is intact, too.

The fringing seems really noticeable on the petal edge.

Polariser magic

Just got myself some polarisers for the Canon 28-135 IS and the Sigma 50-500, thought it might be useful for folks to see the effect a polariser has on reflections so here goes.

A tripod most definitely eliminates camera shake...

A tripod most definitely eliminates camera shake (unless you're shooting outdoors in a gale!) and if you don't have a remote release then your timer is perfect for getting the shot taken, yep!
