It's called a bulbous bow. The bow helps reduce drag, and increases the boats fuel efficiency and stability.

Brings back memories from my childhood Orv. I used to watch pro roller derby on TV with my grandfather. He loved it.

For me, the portrait would be better in a brighter, clear shot. The pose, the model, the setting all call for a less gritty look.

The second one seems more appropriate all the way around.

I've found that for darker skinned people, and even the light complected pushing the red channel to the lighter side when converting to B&W reduces that blotchy grittiness. Sometimes the yellow too....

I like the idea of the B&W, but to me, the processing seems a little gritty, especially for Carla. It doesn't seem kind to her complexion.
