1) The Aftermath

I don't know about you, but once the Photograph of the Year contest is over, I kinda feel a bit of a "let down" around the Corner (I'll give you links to the winners later in the newsletter). The big excitement over the contest, all the prizes, and the amazing photography, it sort of feels like when you're a kid and you have to go back to school after the Christmas holidays. That being said, it's somewhat of a relief to me... putting together something of that magnitude is crazy. But, just like last year, it was totally worth it. We received hundreds of thousands of visitors, thousands of votes, we had 12 great sponsors, $20,000 in prizes, and hundreds of new members during the "big contest." So what does that mean to you? It means there are a whole bunch of new faces... er... usernames... floating around the Corner - make sure to welcome them all to our community - be patient with the newbies, and take some time out to answer their questions. Now we also have an even more diverse group of talented photographers creating photographs to look at, critique and learn from! A bigger community will also lead to bigger prizes, and more contests - maybe even an update to the site eventually to add more functionality to the Corner. Of course, with massive growth, always comes some additional costs. I'm sure you've noticed if you're a regular around the Corner that our server is starting to become overworked (again). Within the next couple of months, we're going to move up to another server to accommodate the growth and number of people around the Corner all the time. Keep your eyes on the Corner Blog for ways that you can help. Without your support, and the support of our sponsors, the Corner would never have existed this long (our 4th birthday is coming up!!).

2) Sponsor: Snaptotes.com

You may have seen some of their banners floating around the site, and I'm sure you saw their sponsorship of Contest Corner Challenge #45. Know who I'm talking about yet? (of course you do, their name is in the heading of this section!) Snaptotes.com, of course. If you're not really all that familiar with them, you can start by reading a review I just did on a couple of their products (Read the review here: http://www.photographycorner.com/pro...tom-photo-bags ) and checking out their website here: http://www.snaptotes.com. To sum up, they take your best photographs, and turn them into professionally-looking designer hand bags. You can see a couple that I had done in my review. Trust me, they're hot. We also have a special deal just for PhotographyCorner.com members, as well. From now, until the end of March 2008, you can save 10% of all purchases at Snaptotes.com. Just use the promo code "snapcorner08" and save yourself 10%! Gotta love it when sponsors give us discounts, too, eh?

3) Help Around the Corner

While it may appear to some that I make this place run all by myself, it's far from the truth. There are hundreds of active members around the Corner who help me out by reporting spam, helping others, answering questions, making suggestions, etc - that makes my job so much easier. In addition to the "regulars," though, there's also a small group of dedicated members called "Moderators" or "Mods" for short. These people do a lot of "behind the scenes" work like moving threads, correcting posts and policing the forum (in addition to being my eyes and ears... well, just my eyes, I guess... around the forums, as I can no longer read and be a part of every post). These guys (and girls!) do an amazing job that generally goes unnoticed by most, but they really are what makes this place run as smoothly as it does. You can tell someone's a Mod by their user rank (it says Moderator under their name) and by their blue camera rank icons (everyone else's are either black or orange). If you see one of these Mods around, make sure to thank them for all the hard work they do around the forum.

That brings me to my next point - we need some more Mods. This place is getting so big, it's getting hard for myself and the 10 Mods to keep track of everything, so we're looking to add some more to the fold. We're not officially taking applications yet, but keep your eye on the Corner Blog for more information in the next week or two for an announcement. You think you have what it takes to be a Mod?

4) Community Decisions: Part II

If you remember from last newsletter, we were discussing (and voting) on a couple of items. The first one on whether we should limit the number of contest wins by 1 person, and the other regarding additional email from the Corner. In case you missed it, the results are in: http://www.photographycorner.com/blo...ils-and-limits With regards to the first question, the community overwhelmingly decided that we should NOT limit contest wins for a numbers of reasons (lowers the bar, no fun when the best aren't competing, etc). Our second community decision around emails from the Corner was a little less decisive, but I believe we reached a good compromise. It means a little more email from the Corner, but you can always opt out of it if you want. You can read all the details here: http://www.photographycorner.com/blo...ils-and-limits

5) CCC & PotM Updates

Just a couple of quick notes here on the contests (since, because of our decisions we just talked about, you're already receiving PotM and CCC updates in your email). Of course, the February 2008 Photograph of the Month has come and gone, leaving jrgold the winner (barely - it was a super close vote) with his photo "Wide." We've been through 2 Contest Corner Challenges since our last newsletter, as well. CCC#44: Photolfaction was in the middle of voting when the January 2008 newsletter went out, and the winner was Karen (for the 2nd contest in a row) with her photograph of a "Warm Cinnamon Roll." Shortly thereafter we announced CCC#45: Musical Visualizations, which basically asked you to photograph something to do with music. The Contest Corner Challenge Cing, Carl Chalupa (see what I did there with the 6 C's? hehe) - aka Spicoli - won his NINTH CCC with a sweet photograph of a xylophone. And if that's not enough contest news for you, I've got one more. A couple of days ago, we announced CCC#46: Facial Expressions. CCC#46 calls for close-ups of someone's face (just one person - and their face should fill up most of the frame) with the title of the photograph being the emotion their face is expressing. So if you love to shoot people (or maybe you just need some practice!), this contest is for you! Entries are due in by Monday, February 25th, 2008. For the full scoop on CCC#46, check out the contest thread: http://www.photographycorner.com/for...ad.php?t=69828

6) "Noteworthy Notables"

For those that are new to the Corner (or for those of you that have never read this far down in a newsletter before), the Noteworthy Notables have been a steadfast section here in the Corner Newsletter. It gives a brief run-down of the cool threads, new articles and blog posts, and other "worth checking out" stuff that has happened here on the Corner.

7) Strong Through 2008

The Photograph of the Year contest always kicks the Corner off to a good start for each year. Membership is up, the number of new threads and posts per day are up, more and more people are subscribing to the blog, the number of photographs uploaded to the site is up, etc, etc... But they key to continued growth (which is ultimately good for all of us here at the Corner), is to have this continue throughout the year. There will obviously be dips, especially in the summer (because we're all out using our cameras, instead of sitting in front of a computer all the time), but that doesn't mean that we're not going to keep growing. This is an awesome photography community - the best on the Net in my opinion (though I'm probably slightly biased), and it's because of the great community we have here. So many people are not only willing to help, but wanting to help. There are dozens, if not hundreds of beginner and amateur photographers that have joined the Corner, and have improved their photography (and confidence) enough to go pro or semi-pro in the past 4 years. That's, in part, because of this awesome community. It's not even been 4 years yet (a little over a month until we turn 4 here at the Corner), and we already have over HALF A MILLION posts, and over 11,000 members. How crazy is that?! At the rate we're going, in less than 2 years, this place will have ONE MILLION DOLLARS... er, posts... posts, not dollars. How cool will that be?! As long as we just continue to do everything that we're doing to make this place awesome, we'll just keep getting better and bigger, and bigger and better... and as long as we're all improving our photography, helping others, and having fun along the way, what more could we ask for?

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
