1) "The Corner"

I was going to give you some excuses as to why this newsletter is late, but none of them are very good or true. ;) It's just been a busy week (more on that near the end of the newsletter), so let me first welcome those to the Corner that didn't know this newsletter was late until reading this sentence. ;) If you're new to PhotographyCorner (or, as we usually refer to it, "the Corner"), welcome! We're glad to have you here in our community. You may have thought you just joined another forum, or subscribed to another photography blog, or maybe you thought you just signed up to look at some amazing photographs, but you're wrong. You've joined a COMMUNITY. Everyone here loves photography. We live and breathe photography (well, maybe not all of us are that obsessed, but once you're a photographer, you really see the world in a different way...). All of us gather here on a daily, weekly, monthly basis to "hang out" with other people who love photography and photographs as much as we do. I mean, you DO love photography, right? Even if you just got your first camera last week, aren't you hooked? Some of us have been into photography for decades and decades, and others, merely days and days; but one thing is the same for all of us: We just can't put our cameras down. It's like special "photography blood" runs through our veins. You know what I'm talking about. You're thinking about a photograph or potential photograph right now while you're reading this, aren't you??! PhotographyCorner isn't just a forum, or a blog, or contests, or galleries, or tutorials, or whatever all the other stuff we have here. The Corner is a community of a bunch of photography-loving people. So if you haven't already, join in with the rest of the community - make threads and posts in the forums, upload photos to the galleries, and participate in some contests (and even win some prizes)!

3) Featured Chats

Believe it or not, the Corner has had chat available on the site for several years. That being said, it's probably the least-used feature we have on the site, at least until a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it, we had our first (at least first in a long time), official chat. 25ish people showed up, and we basically just hung out in the Corner Chatroom for an hour. Everyone that was there really seemed to enjoy it, so we've decided to do some more. Our first one (you can read more about it on the Corner Blog) was pretty much just a "meet & greet" sort of chat, with no specific agenda. Over the summer, we're going to try out some different topics at different times and see what topics work well as a chat. Some of the ideas we've had so far are software-related chats (like how to do certain things in Photoshop, etc), "ask the pro" chats (where we bring in a couple of pros, and you can just throw some questions at them), as well as specific techniques and equipment-related chats. We haven't quite finalized the summer schedule yet, so keep your eye on the Corner Blog to see when the chats are coming up. If you have some ideas or feedback on the chats, just look for the Corner Chat topic in the Conversation Corner in the forums. Oh, and if you want to check out our chatroom, just scroll to the bottom of the main forum page, and click on "Chat."

4) CCC#51 & CCC#52

Last week, Contest Corner Challenge #51 finished, with jim3584 coming away with the victory with his photograph "Baby the Wind Must Blow." For winning, James picked himself up a free, 1-year subscription for a Power Account at SmugMug.com. The next day, we announced CCC#52: Feathered Friends, which challenged you to go photograph a bird (duh!). This is a super popular time of year for "birders," so I'm expecting to see a lot of great bird photographs for this contest. Remember: photographs must be taken during the time period of the contest to qualify! Entries are due by Monday, June 30th, and then voting starts on July 1st. If the winner is a Premiere Member, they'll receive a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.com! If you're not a Premiere Member, what are you waiting for??! Check out all the Premiere Membership details here: http://www.photographycorner.com/premiere-membership

5) Coming Down the Pipes

Remember over the past couple of months we've been doing a fundraiser for a new server for the Corner? Well, it's on the way, and it is going to be BLAZING FAST! It's being built as we speak, and sometime around the end of June/beginning of July, we should be moving into the new server. It's been a long time coming!! And if that wasn't enough, this coming Saturday, if everything goes according to plan, we'll also be updating the forum software to the latest and greatest version. It may cause a little chaos on the site over the weekend, but in the end it will be worth it. Keep your eye on the Corner Blog for more info on this as the weekend grows closer.

6) "Noteworthy Notables"

For those that are new to the Corner (or for those of you that have never read this far down in a newsletter before), the Noteworthy Notables have been a steadfast section here in the Corner Newsletter. It gives a brief run-down of the cool threads, new articles and blog posts, and other "worth checking out" stuff that has happened here on the Corner. Enjoy!

7) Link Up the Corner

So we're pulling into the summer months around the Corner. Over the past 4 years, this generally marks the slowest time around the Corner (not drastically slower like most sites, but still noticeably slower). People go on vacations, spend more time outside, etc, so it's natural they are on the computer less. I'm not hurt by that - it's totally understandable (I'll try not to cry... too much). The question is, how can we keep the Corner active during the summer? The answer: link up the Corner. Invite new people to check the Corner out by posting a link up to PhotographyCorner on your blog, your myspace page, in facebook, where ever. Links to the Corner benefit us two-fold. Obviously, if you put up a link, people that visit your site/myspace/facebook will come check out the Corner (the more, the merrier, right?). In addition to that, though, are the benefits in the search engines (like Google and Yahoo). The more links that point to the Corner from different sites, the better the search engines will think the Corner is, and the more photographers the search engines will send us (we like more photographers - more photographers at the Corner = good). We've put together some banner and link ideas, and you can check them out here: http://www.photographycorner.com/banners - So there you have it - you, too, have the power to make the Corner a bigger and better place!

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
