So, which dSLR should I buy?

We see this question often. Here's a link to an article that may help with your decision.

Interesting article. I just recently ordered a Canon Rebel Digital SLR 12.2 mp, that comes with a 18-55mm lens. I have a couple of lens from my Canon 35mm film camera (35-80mm & 75-300mm - Canon lens), which I am assuming will work on the digital camera. But I am wondering if I should have maybe spent a little more money and bought the Canon 50D 15.1mp Camera? Any thoughts? Are more megapixels necessarily better? Is the 50D maybe too much camera for me?

"Are more megapixels necessarily better?"

definitely NOT. more megapixels will give you larger image files, but not necessarily better images. i've seen fabulous photos taken with 3-5Mp cameras. the main advantages of higher resolution are that you can make larger prints without upsizing files, and you can crop part of the image, if desired, to improve composition. that said, i haven't found much i can't do with 10-12Mp.

the Canon 50D is about on a par with the 40D for image quality, but because they crammed so many pixels on the APS-c sensor, it's reached the point where diffraction limiting is becoming an issue. if you buy a 50D, be prepared to invest a lot more in lenses, because images from the 50D will NOT be as clean and sharp as you'd like with lenses like your 18-55 or any of your older film lenses. unless you really feel the need for that extra 3Mp (which will NOT make any appreciable difference in your images as far as print size, etc.), i would spend the money on better lenses for your XSi.
