1) "Auto" Photographers

As the cost of purchasing an entry-level dSLR continues to decrease (we're taking less than $500), more and more "photographers" are popping up all over the place. These days it's almost as common to see someone with an dSLR as a regular ol' point-and-shoot camera, and honestly, most people simply use their entry-level dSLR's as a point-and-shoot camera. Stick it on auto and shoot away. A lot of you that are reading this newsletter have moved beyond using your dSLR as a point-and-shoot, though - and you know what it took to get where you're at: practice, learning and practice. Of course, if you only practice in "auto mode," you'll merely become an accomplished "auto" photographer. The only way to get better is to turn that dial. If you're an "auto" photographer, take your camera out at least once this month and try it out in aperture or shutter priority mode. If you're a shutter or aperture priority photographer, give manual a go once or twice this month. The more control you have over your camera (once you learn how it all works), the better your photographs will be. And that's the point, isn't it? You don't want to be a good "auto" photographer, you want to be a good photographer.

2) Sponsor: Lensbaby

Lensbaby has been one of the most popular sponsors around the Corner over the years. Their popular selective focus lenses always seem to bring out the best in photographers, and they're always one of the most coveted prizes in contests. Earlier in the year they released a new line of lenses ( you can read our review of the Lensbaby Composer in the Corner Resource Center: http://www.photographycorner.com/pro...ive-focus-lens ), and just this past week have announced two new additional optics to their family: the Fisheye and the Soft Focus. The six-element, multi-coated optical design of the Fisheye lens features an ultra-wide 12mm focal length capable of capturing a 160 degree fisheye angle of view from infinity all the way down to one-inch from the front of the lens. The multi-coated optical glass doublet of the Soft Focus lens creates a flatter field of focus than previous Lensbaby optics, making this optic well-suited for a variety of soft focus applications. This new optic does not have the "sweet spot" of sharp focus and dramatic blur outside of that spot created by the Double Glass, Single Glass, and Plastic Optics. Overall, 2 great new additions to the new Optic Swap System. Check out and buy the new optics at http://lensbaby.com/optics.php

8) The BIG One

While most people probably stumble upon the Corner because of all the fantastic photography contests we run, most end up staying because of the fantastic community we have here. Everyone is helpful and friendly, always wanting to improve and help others improve. I LOVE the community here. But community doesn't win people prizes. The PhotographyCorner.com 2009 Photograph of the Year contest is coming... The past 3 PotY contests have featured hundreds of entries, tens of thousands of votes and hundreds of thousands of visitors - and best of all: $50,000 in prizes. The BIG one is coming... in less than 40 days. Are you ready?

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
