swirl in the sky

A shot from a fantastic Northern Lights storm on May 7-8. It kept going all night, with the lights filling every part of the sky, even in the South.

I didn't venture far from home that night, so trees became the foreground in many shots. Sometimes, though, simple is beautiful enough.

I'll be posting some more soon.

Thank you, Jimmy. And, I do consider myself very lucky to be able to experience things like this.

Thanks, Marty. I hope you get the chance to see the Lights in person one day. Some of the displays are absolutely breathtaking.

Re: swirl in the sky

Beautiful image. I would love to see the Aurora someday but in Texas that is not going to happen. What was your reasoning for shooting this at F 2.8?

Thanks for commenting, Stealth.

First of all... how do you know I shot this at f2.8? It always baffles me how people extract info from photos.

Anyway, for night/astrophotography you use the smalles f number available (I have the Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 for just that reason. ), and the highest ISO before you suffer from too much noise (I have the Canon 6D, which is amazing in low light), unless the Aurora is bright, then dial down the ISO.

Re: swirl in the sky

For the exif data I use this online reader http://regex.info/exif.cgi

What advantage do you have using the low F number? Is it simply to gather more light and have a shorter shutter speed?

Basically. I've always used the lowest F number possible, and the lowest ISO. Obviously, sometimes the ISO has to go high, as the Aurora isn't always as bright. but the Canon 6D is a beast when it comes to high ISO, especially compared to the 7D I was using before.
