1) Welcome to a New Year

Well, we're a month into 2011, and what a fantastic year it's been so far. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of months, you're well aware of the Photograph of the Year contest that's been going on around the Corner. Just a couple of days ago, we revealed the winners after several weeks of voting. If you missed the entry period and voting, you're not going to want to pass up the opportunity to check out the top 10 photographs - especially the 2010 Photograph of the Year: Great Horned Owl - Incoming by Vince Maidens. A spectacular photograph! Check out the top 10 prize winners here: http://www.photographycorner.com/photograph-of-the-year

As we settle back into the "normal" routine here around the Corner, you can expect fewer emails from me (we will still send updates via the private messaging system, though, and these monthly newsletters of course). That being said, the fun doesn't stop just because the Photograph of the Year contest is over. We run a monthly contest (aptly named the Photograph of the MONTH contest), as well as a dozen or so themed contests called "Contest Corner Challenges." We'll begin voting on the current CCC later today, and the next challenge will be announced in a week or so. Then, of course, there are the galleries, the forums, the blog, the Premiere Projects, the articles, tutorials and product reviews, the Marketplace, the chatroom... the list goes on (and on and on and on...). Needless to say, while the "big" contest of the year has come to a close, it's really just the beginning of another great year here around the Corner. We're looking forward to seeing your photographs (and to see you improve as a photographer!).

2) Sponsor: PrintedArt

PrintedArt is not only the lead sponsor of the 2010 Photograph of the Year contest, but they've also sponsored several of our Photograph of the Month contests (providing several members with FANTASTIC LOOKING prints). In addition, they've continued to support and invest in the growth of the PhotographyCorner community by advertising in the newsletter and on the site as well (I'm sure you've seen their banners around!). The best part about working with PrintedArt, however, is that the product/service they provide is superb.

They mount your printed image with a special adhesive to a double layer of thin aluminum with a PVC core in between. This material guarantees extraordinary stiffness and a very even surface. As an additional protective layer, the image receives a laminated finish to protect it from the elements and from UV damage. Both matte and glossy images can be mounted on aluminum dibond (and the mounted image comes with hangers that allow for the image to hang frameless). Sealing the image with a layer of acrylic gives it sheen and guarantees extraordinary durability. The image is mounted behind an acrylic plate before being glued on the aluminum dibond. In addition to the increased durability, this method gives the images improved depth perception and vibrance. It sounds complicated, but the end result is fantastic. It's clean, it looks professional, and best of all, it really brings out and enhances each photograph. Could we, as photographers, ask for anything more out of a print?

For more information, and to see how good your photographs will look printed on aluminum dibond with acrylic, visit them at http://www.printedart.com

8) Sharing Your Knowledge

When it comes down to it, the core of the PhotographyCorner community is about sharing and learning from each other - with the goal of becoming better photographers and taking better photographs. The forums and galleries are the most obvious avenues for this, as we can easily comment on and discuss photos posted up by ourselves as well as other photographers (from all over the world!). But it's the Corner Resource Center (http://www.photographycorner.com/resources) that receives the majority of the traffic to PhotographyCorner. People love to read the advice of others; whether it's an article, a tutorial, or even a product review. Even if you're not a pro or a seasoned veteran, there's much to be learned from each other. If you have some time, why not pick up your favorite lens, or a neat piece of gear that you like and write up a review for the Corner? I promise I'll post it quickly (and you'll even get a little medal next to your name in the forums!). Share your thoughts on your favorite (or even your least favorite!) piece of photography-related equipment, and those of us looking for something similar will benefit from your thoughts and experience with that product. I've written up 5 or 6 myself in the past month (you probably saw the links above in section 4) to set a good example. Now it's your turn. Let's see what you got - tell us why you love (or hate!) that new lens/bag/filter/software/camera/tripod/etc. ;)

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
