Through the mist

Just after midnight on 1 January I was prowling the streets of Reykjavik with my camera, hoping for some good fireworks shots, but the weather was so still that the smoke from the fireworks lay over the city like a shroud and the fireworks looked more like flashes of light inside a cloud than multicoloured explosions (although you do see one dim explosion in the first photo).

I went down to the harbour and instead of fireworks caught some misty, moody shots of the ships and boats.

Critiquing welcome.

Small boats, used for recreation and fishing:

From the left: a trawler, 2 coast guard ships, and a ship that serves as a floating school for seamen and search and rescue teams to learn about safety at sea and effective rescue methods. The concert hall Harpa looms behind them.

Re: Through the mist

I do like the 2nd shot...it does have that misty feel to it. Nice capture.

Veru nice Icy, I sure would like to visit your homeland someday. Your images remind me of a lonely walk afterdark.

Re: Through the mist

Very sharp foreground elements help accentuate the background fog/mist and thus the sense of depth....well captured.

Re: Through the mist

Both capture the feel but the B&W seems more compelling/appealing to my eye. ~ jerrywb

Re: Through the mist

Very nice captures. The B&W is appropriately Alfred Hitchcock sinister but I like the second best. That must be some concert hall since it dwarfs the ships in the foreground.

Re: Through the mist

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

I shot these with the camera on a tripod, using slow exposures and bracketing to make sure I got some usable shots.
