Panorama Trail: Trailhead to Illouette Creek

This is one of the most spectacular trails in Yosemite with great views of the valley and several angles of Half Dome. The trail tarts with a steady decent to the Illouette Creek and Illuette falls.

There are 2 trail heads, this is the one nearest the parking lot.

The trail begins with a modest descent to the Illouette Creek

The Descent

This is a look ahead to the top of the Nevada Falls. It would take us about 5 hours to hike there from this spot.

The trail winds down from Glacier Point offer every vantage point of Yosemite's most famous landmark Half Dome

While the trail does have a lot of exposed areas to the sun, there are quite a number of shady foresty areas as well.

Aside from Washburn Point this is the only way to view the Illouette falls. There is a nice rocky out cropping where if you are brave you can sit.

From the out cropping you are about a mile or less from the Illoutte Creek crossing. There is a agreat place just off the trail for a quick lunch, with a view of the bridge.

Our hike was cool in the morning and it warmed up a bit in the afternoon, but if hiking this trail in the middle to end of the summer, be sure to bring iodine tablets or a micro biotic filter as there is not running water along the way. This area would be a good place for the first re-fill if needed. In our case it was still cool so we still had 1 liter of water and proceeded on after lunch.

Re: Panorama Trail: Trailhead to Illouette Creek

Thanks everyone. Please note though this is not the entire trail and perhaps the easiest part of it. The next section is the ascent to the Nevada falls and then the decent from the Nevada Falls and Vernal Falls via the Mist Trail. For most I would recommend a slightly alternate route using the John Muir Trail which will add about 2 more miles to the hike, but the Mist trail is perhaps the most difficult section and slowest area to walk due to the steps.
