1) Better Late Than Never

I realize that February has come and gone. But yes, this is still the February newsletter. February was a crazy month - everything from all the Photograph of the Year stuff (more on that below) to personal family issues has delayed the release of this newsletter. Every time I say down to write it (and sometimes I even got most of the way through), I just couldn't get it done. Life happened, and unfortunately, the Corner got the short straw. While PhotographyCorner is more-or-less a 1-man show, I have a fantastic supporting cast made up primarily of the moderators. If you haven't thanked a mod lately, take a couple of minutes to do so. If they weren't around, the Corner would have died a long time ago. So here it is - the February 2009 newsletter... 5 days into March. Better late than never, right?

Over the past couple of months, both in the newsletters, blog posts, and posts on the forum, we've talked about the upcoming changes to the Corner. While some of them have been implemented already (have you checked out the new Corner Contest Galleries? http://photographycorner.smugmug.com ), some of them are still waiting to be done (some major changes to the Critiques/Feedback forums). They've not been forgotten. They are on the list. They will be done. Hopefully sooner rather than later. There's so much I/we want to do to continue to grow PhotographyCorner and continue to make it an awesome online resource for photographers - and with your help, we'll get there. Keep your eye on the Corner Blog to find out more about how you can help.

2) Sponsor: Tafota.com

If you're a professional photographer (or aspiring to be one!), you probably have a web site (and if you don't, you should!). Take a minute and think about your website. How easy is it to update with fresh images or content? If you have a webmaster you just call or shoot him or her an email and wait 3-4 weeks and then get a bill for $150 for a few changes. If you do it yourself you labor over it for hours, but at least the price is right. Well, I found this company called Tafota that has really nice Flash website templates you can manage yourself without the fuss. Imagine having the ability of creating up to 20 pages of information, have up to 6 galleries of 50 images each and being able to switch them out easily. Change your color scheme with just a couple mouse clicks. They even have a music library already built in for you. But what's really great is if you call them with a question, most of the time a real person answers (and the real person actually knows what they're talking about)! They also give you the option of purchasing one of their templates or leasing one. In the long run it's less expensive to purchase, but with the lease program you can check things out and get started for pocket change. As an added bonus (being a member of the Corner does have its benefits, you know!) you can take advantage of an offer for $50 off the set up fee. Check them out at http://www.tafota.com and click on the Designs button to see examples of their different templates. Use the promo code "pc" to take the $50 off if you order (this is a limited-time offer, so if you're sitting on the fence, now is the time to get your website up and running!). With Tafota, managing your website has never been easier.

7) Changing of the Seasons

For a lot of people, this time of year brings numerous changes in what type of photographs we take. In the northern hemisphere, as weather warms up, we tend to head outside again and capture nature. In the southern hemisphere, it's starting to get colder, and more and more photographs are being taken indoors. Of course for those that live near the equator, it's always pretty warm, and both the inside and outside have their advantages and disadvantages. Regardless of where you live, and regardless of what the weather is like outside at this very moment, if you're a photographer, it's the perfect time to take a photograph. If you've got that "photo bug" inside of you - you know... you just love taking photos... you eat, dream, sleep photography - you know what you want to be doing right now: PHOTOGRAPHY. Don't let the weather stop you. Go outside in that snow storm and capture some shots you've never captured before. Head out in that heat wave and capture the palm leaves blowing in the warm wind. The easiest way to get stuck in your photography is to stay still. While photography is essentially capturing still moments in time, the only way you'll grow in your photography is to move around. How else will you, and those looking at your photographs, get to explore the world? So what are you waiting for? This newsletter is all but done. Shut down your computer, grab your camera and get outside and take some pictures!!

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
