1) New Moderators

Every once and a while we add some new moderators to the Corner - you know, the people that move threads for you, answer questions, fight spam... the ones with the blue camera rank icons... They're they ones that make PhotographyCorner so awesome. Recently, we added a bunch of new mods to the Corner, so when you see them floating around the Corner, make sure to thank them for all the hard work they put into the site. The moderators on the Corner are (in no particular order): Jewel (Julie), chellezfotoz (Michelle), Musteno802 (Russ), fatcatphotos (Jenn), LaluG (Laurie), Scott111184 (Scott), RogersDA (David), CornflakeGirl (Nicole), DDAY (Dan), digital2006 (Marty), Erik Bernskiold (Erik), grif04 (Kevin), newlove (Lise), Nikon_Mario (Mario), Oneof42 (Andy), Tyger (Ermin) and Zheng (Gavin). Whew! Together with the new mods, we've got some neat stuff coming up for members of the Corner. I'd love nothing more than to tell you what's coming around the Corner... but that would ruin the surprises... In the meantime, if you have a question about the site, need some help or have a question, just look for the mods - you'll be able to spot them because they're the ones with the little blue cameras above their username. They'd be more than happy to help!

2) Sponsor: Articles By Amy

If you've been around the Corner for even a month or so, you're probably already familiar with Amy Renfrey - she writes the "Articles By Amy" series that we feature on the Corner Blog. Throughout the month of April we featured dozens of articles and videos by Amy (check out section 4 of the newsletter for links) that she continues to offer to us free-of-charge. You can thank Amy, of course, by commenting on her articles and videos in the Corner Blog forum. But another way you can thank her (and become a better photographer at the same time!) is by purchasing her ebooks and by subscribing to her new ezine. As an added bonus, a portion of each sale is donated to supporting the Corner, so it's a win-win situation for everyone!! Here are the links to her products:

Digital Photography Success Package: http://bit.ly/9gmQf
Powerful Landscape Photography: http://bit.ly/grzBL
Focus eMagazine: http://bit.ly/dHK6T

I've had a chance to read through both of her ebooks, and have had a sneak peak at the first couple issues of the Focus eMagazine - they're all pretty solid. One of the neat things with the ezine is it comes with 1+ hours of video each month as well. If you want to improve your photography (and if you're like me and just can't get enough of that Australian accent), do yourself a favor and spend a couple of bucks to become a better photographer.

6) Two Things

When it all comes down to it, there are really only two things that will help you to become a better photographer: take more photographs, and participate in a photography community. The first is obvious - the more photographs you take, the more you'll learn about photography and your camera. You'll learn what techniques produce the best results, why framing is important, what settings to use in certain situations, etc. The old adage holds (more or less) true in that "practice makes perfect." While simply taking more photographs may not make all your photographs perfect, it'll certainly help you take better photographs.

The second thing that will help you become a better photographer is participating in a photography community (like PhotographyCorner). It's sort of like "crowd-sourcing" your photography. The more people that look at and critique or give you feedback on your photographs, the better you'll be able to understand why certain photographs work, and why some "just don't work." Opinions from beginner, amateur and pros alike will help you to shape your photography. A beginner photographer will just tell you that your photograph is "awesome" - while the critique seems simple, that can tell you that to a non-photographer (and let's be honest, most of the people that look at your photography will not be professional photographers) that photograph is a good one. Amateurs can give some feedback on framing, color, etc, while the pros can give an more in-depth review by discussing more high-level aspects of photography. With more feedback from more people, you'll have more opportunities to learn and grow as a photographer. Another facet of crowd-sourcing your photography is the opportunity you have to review the photographs of other photographers. By looking at and critiquing photographs taken by someone other than yourself, it will actually help you better understand your own photography. Trust me - give it a try! I challenge you to critique three photograph per day for the rest of the month. I guarantee it will help you to improve your photography. If not, I'll give you your money back!

So to sum up: take more photographs + participate on the Corner = you being a better photographer. It couldn't be more simple.

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
