lesser yellowlegs

this little fella was foraging along the water's edge at a pond yesterday afternoon... same pond where i found the sandpipers. unlike the sandpipers, however, this one was quite skittish, and would take off if i got any closer than about 20 yards. i "chased" it around the pond a couple of times, and managed these shots... not my best, but better than any other shots i have of a yellowlegs...

Good. I was anguishing over Greater vs Lesser. It is in non-breeding plumage and I tend to think of the Lesser as having longer primary (wing) projections past the tail. Most telling is the beak: 1.) significantly longer than depth of head and 2.) Greater has a paler portion of the bill nearer its face/head.

BTW: really nice, sharp shots.
