Pilansberg National Park

I had the privilege to visit Pilansberg National Park, about two hours from where I live, and it is probably only 2nd to the Kruger Park in terms of wildlife. Very much smaller, but it boasts the Big 5, as well as Wild Dog, and the only place I have seen Brown Hyena (twice over the years) and a host of birds that are endemic to the area. Close enough for a day trip, which means I have to go as early as 04:00 in the morning to get there when the gates open. A few shots from my 3 day visit on this occasion, with my son that was visiting from the USA.

Giraffe licking on what I presume is a mineral rich stone/rock, (though it is possibly salted wated that has been strewn over the rock by staff at the nearby restaurant and visitor center). The Giraffe had just chased away a few Wildebeest that were also licking the stone. Giraffe have been known to munch on old bones, presumable also for the minerals.

And just missed the actual birth by about 10 minutes, of this Wildebeest calf. The Placenta and Umbilical cord still visible, and it struggled to stay on its feet.

Re: Pilansberg National Park

Thanks RedOx. Mostly these would be shot on Av, as I could use a bean bag either at a hide or resting on my car window, the exception being the leopard. For that I was just lucky . And of course brightened in PP with Gimp.
