Plane Spotting

Got to spend the day with some locals at Boston's Logan Airport shooting arrivals and departures. Normally if one were to pull out a camera on the roof of a parking garage near an airport in this area one would likely get a one way ticket to Gitmo. And never mind on September 10th..... But the group had worked with the airport administration and everything went off without a hitch.

The weather was perfect and the planes just kept coming and going. Here's a small sample of some of the action. Granted it's not airshow action but it's close.

Thanks for Looking!

Re: Plane Spotting

Very nice series, that is a busy airport, I've never seen side by side landings like that!

Re: Plane Spotting

Cool - I love the simultaneous landing (never seen that before). I also love the 1st shot, showing how the heat of the engines distorts the background.

Re: Plane Spotting

These are really clear and sharp and well-composed shots. I've never been to Logan, but we'll be flying in there next month for a tour of Boston and a ship cruise up the east coast of Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I'm hoping for good fall colors...

Re: Plane Spotting

All are sharp and well exposed. Intriguing set, especially the 2-for-1 in #2, I'm surprised they aren't more staggered timewise. Is that Deer Island in the background of #3? Nice captures of the initial touch downs.

This motivates me to take up a standing offer from a friend, fellow photographer, and former co-worker who now is a manager at SeaTac airport for a private shoot with virtually unfettered access.

Re: Plane Spotting

Thanks everyone, it certainly is a busy airport, busier than I ever thought. I believe there was either a departure or an arrival almost every minute to minute and a half. There is so much to watch with the arrivals, departures and ground operations it's incredible. I ended up with over 1700 shots.

The side by side was a bit unusual as operations were mainly to the far runway (4R). There were only a handful of landings on the nearer of the two (4L). Unfortunately all but the heavies departed going away from us. Depending on the winds from our location it's either the touchdown location or about a couple hundred feet after liftoff.

Russ that is Castle Island in the background of #3. And if you have that kind of access to SeaTac I'd say go for it. For me it would be a no brainier, but of course I'm biased because I'll shoot anything that burns Jet-A.
