Fun with Bubbles

Been a while since I've played with my macro lenses. It's raining outside so I decided to play with the studio lights and do something different.

You get a glass vase, fill it up with sparkling soda, choose a colored backdrop (gift wrapping paper does nicely) and let your imagination run.

A couple of lessons learned though.... avoid circular vases. It would have been better if the vase was square and the orange slice could have laid flat against the glass. Even though I stopped down, shooting at 1:1 the edges that drifted away from the glass softened up a bit.

Also, get plenty of sparking water. Fell short on what I thought I needed and had to string together close pins to suspend the objects.

Still a little rusty... been too long. All shot with the Canon 1D Mark III and Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro.

Re: Fun with Bubbles

I enjoyed these enough to try to imitate. Thanks for posting this and your method explained.

Re: Fun with Bubbles

Nice to see you posting again, George. And what a post! I like the color contrast in the first two between the orange and blue. Compositionally, I like the first best. To me--astronomy geek--I like how that one bubble (nice and sharply focused) looks like a planet orbiting a distant sun.

The final shot brought a smile!

Re: Fun with Bubbles

Great effect and thanks for pointing out this technique. (Must try...)

The first two are very bright and happy and thirst-inducing.

The last one made me smile.
