Monestry in the desert

The Mar Sabas monastery is the oldest monastery in Israel which is inhabited without break from the 5th century. The monmonastery is placed on the Kidron River, east to Bethlehem.

C&C are always welcomed!

Re: Monestry in the desert

Thanks for sharing this, I would love to visit your country. There is so much history there. With the deep canyons it is hard to find the right time of day to shoot this Monistary without harsh shadows. I'd like to see more shots from here.

Re: Monestry in the desert

It's a really nice composition of a fascinating location. It looks like you took this photo in early or late light, which illuminates some of the buildings in nice light. The rest of the photo, though, lacks contrast because of the shadow in the valley. Have you been there in different light?

I expect this shot looks pretty much the way it appeared to the eye. I like it.

Re: Monestry in the desert

Thank you so much about the many great comments from you. When I photographed the scenario I was aware of the difficult light situation, but as you get to this place only by Jeep through the desert and some foreign territories (west bank), I could not choose another daytime, neither can I drive there again in the next future. Therefore I took a couple of exposure, so I can fix the light in HDR. The HDR though came out very flat. I attach one version of it here:

I tried this as well, but B/W did not get the effect I wanted.

Re: Monestry in the desert

Hi Zaplig,

That is such a beautiful shot and I am glad you shared it. Where I live or traveled I have never had the pleasure to see such structures. I agree also...in that I too would to see more contrast... I hope you don't mind that I played around with the first photo in color and in black and white. If you do not like it. I will be happy to remove it from this post. Just let me know.

The color version was challenging to adjust the lighting...I don't know though...what do you think?
