Raleigh Skyline

We've had a number of beautiful nights with comfortable temperatures and clear skies. A few nights ago I decided to travel down to Boylan Rd where there is the best vantage point of the downtown skyline. This pano is 5 images stitched.

Re: Raleigh Skyline

Very nicely done, Jesse. Is the blue on the right hand side a big billboard or screen?

That's actually the side of the Convention Center. The color cast rolls through blue, green and purple and projects a large tree. If you zoom in enough you will see the tree and that the shot shows part way through the transition of blue to green.

Re: Raleigh Skyline

Thanks everyone. There is a bit on the left side that I cut off, but I think the composition with the crop is more even not to mention 63x10 or so is a tad excessive

Re: Raleigh Skyline

I rather like photos of cities at night, Jesse, and you've proven adept over the years. This shot looks a bit familiar to me. Did you post a shot from a similar location on Pop? Anyway, I like the shot, and I think it's pretty nicely balanced. At this size, it's hard from me to see, but it looks like the sign or whatever it is on the far left is cropped a bit uncomfortably.

I notice you said 5 images. From the width of the pano, it looks like you took the shots in horizontal mode. I once read an article suggesting taking pano shot in vertical orientation to help control lens distortion and make the stitching easier. I've been using that technique ever since. I don't see distortion here, but another advantage of the technique is that it leaves more room on top and bottom to crop or leave. Anyway, just a thought.

You are correct. I have used this location before, but decided to revisit as my last attempt wasn't as clean as I liked and wasn't a pano.

For this one I ultimately decided to use a horizontal camera position, because I would have picked up a large amount of foreground underneath me which would have in fact added to distortion due to the distance covered.
