Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

One of the reasons I haven't been around so much lately is that I've been doing a bit of travelling. In late August my wife and I spent some time camping in Algonquin Park, a large protected provincial park in Ontario. Here are a few photos from that trip.

our kayaks, on the beach below our campsite, photo taken at dawn:

heading off on the Barron River. That's my wife Maureen in the kayak.

Canoeing in many places in Algonquin brings you across some groups, along with stretches where you don't see anyone for days

The Barron River Canyon makes for some spectacular scenery.

The photos on the water were a bit of a challenge as I took them from my kayak as I paddled along. Fortunately it wasn't too windy. I kept my camera in a water proof bag, took it out when I wanted to take a photo, then replaced it in the bag which I kept attached to my kayak with a bungee cord so that it would be just in front of me.

edit: I find it interesting that the photos appear just a little bit darker here than they do when I look at them on my monitor. Will have to check my conversion process for posting here, though all I did was a resize and added the drop shadow. Oh well...

Re: Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

Thank you for sharing these photos...the river looks so calm and serene. Great captures! I really love the colors in the first shot and I also love the composition too! All the rest of your shots in your kayak are awesome too...and you didn't fall into the water!

Do people do any fishing there?

Yeah - lots of fishing to be had. Many of the people we passed in canoes that wern't sight seeing were fishing.

Thanks Marty. We are hoping to get one more weekend in, perhaps to try and catch some of the fall color there.

Thanks Jim. I had the kayak out a few times and tried a few things with the camera before this trip. I took my D300 with a 16 - 85mm lens. I was too chicken to take my D700.

The trick was to not lean too far over as I was trying to frame the photo that I wanted as the kayak continued to drift. The nice thing about a kayak is its maneuverability - so I could circle around and try to shoot straight on in order to maximize the time I had to get set up take the shot I wanted. I kept a GND filter tucked inside my life jacket and would put that on when I had lots of sky in order to get the cloud detail. Unfortunately the water proof bag wasn't big enough to keep it on (Cokin system) so I just put it on when I felt I really needed/wanted the cloud detail.

Re: Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

These shots are beautiful, great work! That area reminds me of upstate New York.

Re: Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

All of them are great, but I really like the last one. Has a slight 3D feel to it (or maybe it's just my eyes ).

Re: Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

Well done Mario. Love them all, especially the serenity of #1. I have been lucky enough to see most of the other shots you took on this trip and I have been lucky enough to see the Barron River Canyon in person. You did a great job of presenting the spectacular scenery that Algonquin Park offers. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

Looks like a great place to be. Very Nice!

For my conversions I always do the following (in CS5)... perhaps this will help retain your intended appearance

- Edit -> Convert Color Profile -> RGB
- Option + Command + I (Image -> Image size) -> decrease demissions (often take the smalled side to 3.5 in
- Shift + Option + Command + S (Save for Web) -> save to jpg or png
