I believe so....I know my submission was posted and accepted. The rules only state that it was taken in 2012

Re: Discuss the PhotographyCorner.com 2012 Photograph of the Year Contest

I understand trying to keep post-processing under control. After all, when you start allowing different PP approaches, things tend to spiral out of control (HDR category, photo-montage category, etc.). Having said that, though, I wonder about the exception to stitched photos, though. There are several locations where even an ultra wide on a full framer can't capture all the detail of the panorama in one shot. I was at the point of clicking "send' on one of my best shots of the year of the city of Pittsburgh before I caught that the pano didn't follow the rules.

Any chance that can change next year?

I wondered about the stiching myself and ended up choosing a different photo for my submission because of this rule. I had hope to sbmit my wife getting a shot of El Cap from the Valley loop trail. Its a pano so I submitted something else.

That of course lends that if the rules change now do we get to review our submissions and submit a new photo (or 2) due to a rule change?

Re: Discuss the PhotographyCorner.com 2012 Photograph of the Year Contest

Certainly willing to consider changes for next year. We usually start planning the contest in September/October... so look for a post in the Conversation Corner around then asking for feedback.

Re: Discuss the PhotographyCorner.com 2012 Photograph of the Year Contest

I'd like to weigh in on the scope of "acceptable" images. It is a slippery slope as to what is/isn't allowed....we've all seen this discussion at any number of places. I could care less if the image is created with a Brownie, Hasselblad, pinhole camera, or anything else.....if the image as presented CLOSELY emulates that actually seen with NOTHING added (vs enhanced), then I'm okay with it. The litmus test is if a 2nd concurrent viewer could readily confirm that's what he/she saw....and we'll have to be on the honor system!

Re using stitched images, I'm absolutely for them. My rationale is that the "alternative" of simply using a wider angle lens does not reckon with the perspective issues inherent in doing so. If I take a picture of Mt Rainier from on or near the mountain itself, to get all of the mountain I must use a wide angle lens and generally must use it shooting up. The inherent decompression (ie making everything near look further and everything far look VERY far) distorts the perception of steepness. The only way to effectively capture that is stitching together a multi-image taken with a normal lense with the lens axis at horizontal plumb. THIS creates an image more closely emulating what the eye sees......and IMHO that's the imperative!
