Re: 2012 Photograph of the Year Voting Guidelines

Great change with the multiple votes per group Tim! I basically voted for all the photos that I wouldn't mind seeing in the second round - the least was 2 votes per group and the most 4. Definitely made making the choices easier this year
Will the voting be the same for the final round (multiple votes) as well?

Depends on how well it works in round 1.

Coming shortly!

I didn't realize they had to be members before outside friends can vote. But I've been inundated by people who have been pressing the 'like' button... which I gather is the correct button to use for voting - am I correct please Tim?

Re: 2012 Photograph of the Year Voting Guidelines

Just to point out climactix, it is not the point of this competition to have all your friends come on and vote for your picture, then disappear off the forum. This is meant to be a photo contest, to drive (permanent) traffic to the site, and to award the best photo taken by one of the site's members. It is not meant to be a popularity contest where the person who can get the most number of his friends to vote for them wins. This is also why images are anonymous, and why you are not supposed to give away which belongs to which member, even if you know that info. If your friends want to vote for the best picture, then by all means, that's great, but if you get your friends to vote for yours no matter what, then that defeats the spirit of the competition. My opinion only of course.

I might be wrong, but I think Tim checks the voting, to see if any "stacking" is involved. I have seen people disqualified before.

Re: 2012 Photograph of the Year Voting Guidelines

You couldn't have said it better Tim - there's nothing worse in my books than to concoct up a spree of outside 'rent a crowd' voters for something as prestige as this - given the amazing prizes that are being offered and the high caliber of entries I've seen so far. Sure, I'm familiar with various tactics users apply while submitting pics but then they vanish off the face of the earth but I think this is a prime example of marketing which hopes to harness new inductees to build up the strength of regular people who have something to contribute.
My saving grace perhaps is that all of those who confirmed to me that had voted are photographers or work in the media themselves which I have worked closely with during the last 32 years as a photojournalist in print and television in Durban, South Africa and they know me very well. Bare in mind that I did notice that photographycorner wanted to harness more folk to it's fleet and it was definitely for the reason I requested certain photographer to do the same. I don't know if any of them have climbed aboard but I certainly hope some have!
But I just need to point out one thing here Tim, you say that this is not meant to be a popularity vote based competition, then why do you have facebook links for competitors to turn towards harnessing more voters and point them directly towards your pic? It contradicts what you said by saying: "This is also why images are anonymous, and why you are not supposed to give away which belongs to which member, even if you know that info." That aside, I agree in whole about what you said. I just wish it was clarified beforehand... which I'm sure we can do for the benefit of all our members including this rookie.
Thanks for responding Tim, I appreciate it lots.
Rob

Re: 2012 Photograph of the Year Voting Guidelines

Rob, just to alleviate some confusion - my name is Viktor and I'm just a user/member here voicing my own opinions. As for the popularity bit, I think you misunderstood my meaning. I didn't say that this is not a popularity vote based competition (i.e. the picture with the most number of votes wins). What I meant is this, and maybe wasn't entirely clear in the last post: the spirit of the competition is not meant to be (and winner decided by) the person who can get the most number of friends to vote for their pictures (i.e. popularity of the person), but rather by everyone simply voting for which they think is the best picture (i.e. popularity of the photo). Either would be a popularity vote contest, but the motivation for voting is different. In order to achieve this voting bias has to be minimized, in this case the pictures are posted anonymously, so that the people voting don't know who the picture belongs to. All I tried to say was that getting friends on board just to vote for a specific photo undermines the premise of the competition. On the other hand if those photog friends join up, vote for which they think is the best photo without regard to whom took the photo, then all's good in the world.

Hi Viktor, thanks for clarifying - I see your point and agree that any submission made must remain completely anonymous

No the "like" button is not the correct way to vote. Within each of the voting threads there is a submission section at the top. Here is where you select the name of the image that you wish to vote for. Again, only members can vote AND member that meet a certain level of qualification based on forum participation.
