All Kinds of Light

I haven't been terribly productive lately, and I'm as tired of apologizing as you all likely are from hearing it! Regardless, I did manage to get out on a clear night for a drive down south of Anchorage to a glacier-fed lake. This area is your last stop before going through the new toll tunnel to Whittier. I couldn't see all the light pollution from the tollgate and the train lights, but the camera sure could! Anyway, I managed to get a shot of the Milky Way, aurora borealis, and man-made lights all in the same exposure. In retrospect I with I'd gone to f/2.8 and ISO 2500, but I thought the long-exposure noise cancellation would be more effective than it was. Anyway, the shot:

Remote Trigger and Bulb Mode, f/5.6, 20 sec, ISO 5000 with long-exposure noise reduction on, tripod

I'd love any feedback you have--it's how I learn!

Re: All Kinds of Light

That's an amazing sky dude !! love the colors and definition in the stars themselves, the exposure time was just right to where the stars are sharp and no motion or streaks

Re: All Kinds of Light

Beautiful shot...and don't worry about not being able to get out and shoot...I've barely picked up my camera in the past month.

Re: All Kinds of Light

Tim, a pretty spectacular night sky. Brave of you to persevere as I'll bet it wasn't "shorts & t-shirt" weather!

Re: All Kinds of Light

Thanks for all the comments, Jim, Hugo, Ian, Marty, Jerry, and Russ.

Here in Alaska we have a lot of advantages and sights many photographers in the lower 48 don't, and I'm pleased to try to get them. The downside, of course, is freezing fingers, long drives to the nearest site, and lots of dull gray clouds. I'm not complaining, mind you--it's just not as easy as I imagined it would be to get out and shoot a lot.

This weekend has some clear weather in the forecast and a decent aurora forecast, so I'm hoping to check out a couple of new spots.
