i hear what your saying tim.... but there are also more than just opinion.... there are things thaat make good art, good portraits, good sports and good landscapes.... if im honest tim, i come on here to have a little fun (or did at the start) and pass a little time, not to improve my work... because like i have said to you before i have a portfolio (or ten) filled with pictures that have either been mag featured used in local newspapers or put in galleries.. i had to sell my beloved camera a while ago (havin kids on a budget isnt recomended) anyway im back in the financial game now, so i will be getting a digislr back soon, maybe i will start to post some more work...but it just seems like this whole forum revoles around soopah and picture cow (no disrespect to them ment as they are fair photographers) and everything they post good or avarage is loved by the members... dont get me wrong ive seen some nice stuff by them... but anyhow....not to worry....

Well, I'd like to think the forum revolves around me, actually. As I am the one who can turn it off in a matter of seconds. (Not that I would, of course... it's too great a source of entertainment for me... hehe.)

Now, without giving this thread a turn for the worse (or a worse turn for the worse), let me just comment on this, and we'll let the issue die here.

I'm more than glad you come here to have fun... I hope everyone is here to have fun... but if you don't think you can learn from anyone, you'll never improve as a photographer, and that's really sad, because no one here is so good that they cannot improve. The great thing about this place is you can have a 10-year-old point and shot camera, or a $12,000 DSLR. It doesn't matter. You could have just gotten your first camera, or you could have one (or 10) portfolios full of published photos. It doesn't matter. As far as I'm concerned, everyone here can learn something from someone else here. If you come in with the attitude that you're a better photographer than anyone else here, and you can't learn from anyone else here, then, well, why are you here? Know what I mean?

ok but your not seeing my point....the reviews people give are often garbage, this is how you expect people to learn? forged into a view that is blatantly wrong.. i can learn from people that know what there talking about, and i can learn from some of the situations ive been in..iraq, trips to asia, great wall of china... but i cant learn from people that give comments that are so of the mark its untrue...tim, people have opinions, and thats what is great about photography..but there is a difference in having an opinion and contradicting your opinion with fact...

Its all about subjectivity. Im sure people saw Jackson Pollocks work as childlike splatters of paint, and lo and behold, his paintings are worth millions of dollars.

Any advice given here is just that, advice, nothing more. It doesnt mean that if someone says use a polarizer, that the world is going to cave in if they dont. Its not doctorine. Its suggestion.

We all look at art in different ways, some things really get people going, while some things turn people off. A photograph of a piece of cheese can be a masterpiece or a piece of crap, it all depends on what way you look at it, and as photographers we all look at things with a different eye.

Granted you have said that you have many a portfolio, and your stuff has been published, Im not knocking you, but I have yet to really see you post something that you want to really wanted to be critiqued on because I have also seen you say that you would never post portfolio quality photos here. I respect you for doing and saying that, but then to what are you really contributing to the community? Apart from all the disagreements that is....

ill leave then..... i cant contribute to something that gets i wrong so often.

i fully understand about subjectivity but there is also good and bad... facts ect ect... how can i post work in here that i will be told its out of focus when its not or post a picture of a screaming girl in tears infront of a tank in iraq to be told the colour isnt right... ive got no problems with being told something is over/under exposed if it actually is.

but your right, i dont contribute as much to this place as i could...other than the three medals for contributing (thats a joke btw ) you are right i dont...partly because i dont get on with the core of the forum and often disagree with them..btw i would never disagree with someone for not liking something...even if its the best technical piece even made... because that is choice,,, but passing opinion as fact and finding fault thats not there is what i have problems with...anyway the other part is my lack of wanting to have good work poorly critiqued (by some not all) i wouldnt mind sharing good photography... but i wouldnt post shots in the photographs for fun forum... because there not for fun...a sharing forum might have me interested..

all i can do is apologize for not contributing to the community enough..

I dont see anything wrong with people to disagree, and as for passing opinions as a fact, I dont know what twisted world does that but mine certainly does not. When I say something looks out of focus IMO (If you dont know, means in my opinion) yes it is a fact that my opinion is something is out of focus, but it is not a fact that the photo is out of focus, it is just an opinion.

Its not like god came down and said "well ill be damned, your $hit outta luck cos thats out of focus."

Its just an opinion. A statement. A view if you will. If I say something looks a certain way, then to me it looks that way. If you can point out to me a different view I would be more than willing to look at it your way.

You dont have to agree with me, hell you dont even have to listen to what I say, either way it doesnt bother me. But as long as Im a member of this forum ill speak my mind, like it or not.

but what you dont seem to grasp is that no matter what you opinion is, something either is or isnt out of focus.... its as simple as that...

Apparrently its not just about being out of focus. You want it to be about fact vs opinion.

Which is fine, you can make it about fact and opinion all you want, but this thread is about Photograph of the Month. NOT fact and opinions. Nor glasses, nor being out of focus.
