Not Using EX Speedlights on my Canon

Is it possible to use a flash unit from my film SLR with my 20D?

I'm going to invest in a speedlight, but in the mean time...

It depends. I don't recall the details, but make sure that the voltages are proper. What flash unit is it and what film camera was it used on before?

Chances are that it won't work. Obviously, it won't offer E-TTL. But I'd be concerned about the voltage. Older units used a higher voltage than newer ones and could cause damage to your camera.

I'll not bother then.

I might use it just as a flash during a long exposure by pressing the test button for some effects...

Thanks for the info!

I have the 420EX and it works well with my 10D. Not as powerful as the 550 or 580, but much cheaper.

Other options: I hear Sigma 500DX (not sure if that's the model number) is a good choice...similar to 550 but less $$

I heard that the manufacturer that actually builds the speedlights for Canon sell them as unbranded units too.

I'll check with the Canon guy near me.
